December 2016
--------------------------
"Bhai saheb, andar jaane ka rastha aur chappal stand kidar hai!!!" was my question to one of a security personnel standing on main road near Mahakaleshwar temple. "Beta, wahan saamne dekho... vo free darshan ka entry hai. Andar chale jaaoge tho thume chappal stand mil jaayega" was the generous reply from the old man.
After getting in to the Retiring Room at the morning, we decided to have a brief rest and proceed towards the main temple of Ujjain, leaving all the electronic gadgets in the room itself. Before entering the temple we had very soft idlys with chutney at Andhra Ashram and with the guidance of policeman, we entered the temple for darshan. Darshan happened to be smooth and effortless and we were able to witness 11 o'clock Abhishekam. Frankly speaking, for someone, who is habituated to those endless waiting in the queue and compartment of Tirumala complex, any darshan will be smooth. After the darshan, we headed back to Retiring room to have some sleep. The station and the temple town, both were clean and well maintained. The station was very peaceful compared to the activities happened a day before in Jaipur. Within a day, the aura of diesel empire was replaced by catenary jungle. There were few Waggies resting at the outer towards Bhopal side. Announcement for both up and down Malwa Express were given. I thought of waiting at platform check the loco links, but tiredness had the better of me.
After a brief nap, we again moved towards the temple at 12PM, not for a darshan again, but to visit other places located around the temple. First, we went to Andhra Ashram where we had lunch. The menu for the lunch was a typical Andhra menu consisting of Rice, Dal, Sambar, chutney, bhindi fry, aalo curry, curd and paapad. The taste and aroma was so great that it reminded me the phrase "Naani ke ghar ka khaana". We visited couple of temples along with Vikramaditya memorial statue and the pushkar ghat on the bank of river Shipra. By the time dusk settled we were back to the station. Since the distance between station and temple was significantly less, the whole day preferred to walk. After another nap, we woke up at 10PM and had lite dinner at the entrance of station. We had chat and roti with subzi for dinner and headed back. On checking NTES, 12976 Jaipur-Mysore Express which we were supposed to board on next was approaching Kota. We packed our bags and decided to sleep for remaining 3 hours to keep ourselves fresh for a 19 hour action packed journey.

Alarm went berserk exactly at 3:30AM and NTES said:"19km to go". We immediately checked out from Retiring room after fresh up and headed down to the platform. The Coach position display right in front of the staircase heading from Retiring room displayed "S5" which means that we need not move here and there to board our assigned coach. Right at 3:55AM our train made a silent entry on to the platform with white stallion Lalaguda(LGD) WAP7 30337 in lead. It was a 2011 made coach with charging ports present and side lower berth was on track side(bingooo!!! 3 in 3 for this trip). But the welcome scene was completely contrasting compared to the one in the first ride. Here 4 passengers with waiting list tickets had occupied our seats. On making a rightful demand they generously made way for us to occupy our dedicated seats. We departed at 4:01AM with a huge delay of 1 minute(for someone from Japan though). As WAP7 was busy in unleashing the beast within, we placed ourselves on our berths for yet another sleep.
By the time I woke up, we had already crossed Narmada river and were making an entry into Hosanghabad. While making a 40 minutes delayed departure, we crossed Varanasi bound Kamyani express hauled by Itarsi WAP4. WOW... same pair of trains, same station, but in opposite direction witnessed 4 days back!!!. The run was sedate all the way till Itarsi outer. We were greeted by a concor rake lead by WAG5 twins from Valsad(BL) while negotiating the grand curve before occupying the platform. At Itarsi I got the opportunity to meet Mr. Suraj Parihar, a passionate Railfan who is fondly known as ET Seth. Even though the conversation lasted for 10 minutes only, we tried to get to know about each other as much as possible and bidden adieu after taking a customary selfie.
We departed from Itarsi at 9:32AM with 17 minutes delay. By the time I reached my seat, it was occupied by my dad!! He gave a stern look at me which held the statement: Eppudu nuvve na, nenu ikkada kurcho kudadha(Always you will take this seat!! Shouldn't I sit here!!). I slowly dragged my self to the opposite window seat, facing opposite to the direction of movement of train. Within no time, we were thrashing intermediate stations at MPS. We had idly and wada ordered from pantry for breakfast. Idly was soft and wada was crispy, but chutney was stale and tasteless. Finally MPS show came to an end when we arrived at Dharakhoh where a tigerfaced WAG7 from Kalyan(KYN) shed was attached as banker. We were crossing the Mahadev hills where screeching sound was the only sound, coming from beneath the coaches. After banker getting detached at Marhamjhiri, we reached Betul at 11:15AM where EMD twins from Hubbali with coal filled boxn rake was waiting. After departing from Betul, our train did a constant MPS show till Chichonda, where in between we made an MPS crossing with Hazrat Nizamuddin bound Dakshin Express hauled by Lalaguda WAP7. While descending the ghat section of Chichonda-Teegaon, we crossed couple of trains hauled by WAP4s with a WAG9 and twins WAG7s as bankers respectively. After exiting from the final ghat section of the trunk route, we crossed with a WAP4 hauling 1 SLR coach, 2 General coaches and couple of JanShatabdi coaches. We reached Pandhurna at 12:36PM and after departing from there, we crossed Jaipur bound Secunderabad-Jaipur Express hauled by Bhagat-ki-Kothi's WDP4D 40275. The crossing made me realize that we crossed the rake in which we traveled 4 days back!!! Meanwhile we were skipping all the intermediate stations at MPS and by the time we reached Kalmeshwar we entered before time zone of the schedule. After clearing Bharatwada and Godhani at MPS we reached Nagpur dot and time and occupied platform 2.
While searching for food options on the platform, announcement for New Delhi bound TamilNadu express was going on. I wasted no time in purchasing food and rushed back to my seat to see the link of the BIG BOSS. Yessss, the Big Boss arrived, and arrived in some style on to platform 1 with Erode WAP4 22244 in lead. After the arrival of Southern Railway's big boy, we made the departure. I brought Egg Biryani on platform, which costed me 60 Rs./- per pack. The quantity was more than enough to satisfy any bhukkad and it was spicy as well. By the time we completed the lunch, we were cruising at sedate pace and witnessed back to back MPS crossings with heavyweights from south India. First was the primo supremo Bangaluru Rajdhani followed by legend from South Central Railway Andhra Pradesh Express... oops Telangana Express :(, both hauled by white stallions from Lalaguda shed. The third line works were worth noting. We made an unscheduled halt at Sindhi. I was expecting a overtake by Delhi Sarai Rohilla-Yeswantpur Duronto Express, but NTES stated that it was running late by 7 hours and we were separated by a safe distance of 250km. The NTES status made me realize a possible mistake which was averted 4 months back. My first plan was to take any train to Bhopal and board Duronto, but destiny had other plan. After a 5 minutes halt, we got the starter to proceed ahead. We reached Sewagram at 3:32PM and departed after the arrival of Yeswantpur-Ghorakhpur Express hauled by Lalaguda WAP4 22205. It was a brisk run till Hinganghat, where we crossed Trivandrum-Korba Express hauled by Erode WAP4 22760. Chandrapur was negotiated at 5:06PM and reached Balharshah at 5:36PM, 19 before time for scheduled departure. As we were killing time, Itarsi WAP4 22757 hauled Yeswantpur-Lucknow exp arrived and occupied platform 4 and Arakkonam WAG5HA twins with empty boxn rake came from behind and occupied platform 2.
We departed bang on time from Balharshah at 5:55PM. Wardha river was negotiated with setting sun in backdrop. After spending whole day time in Central Railways territory, we entered South Central Railways limit to rule the night. We took last remaining samosas from the pantry guy, who was taking order for dinner in parallel. The samosas we had was one of the best I had on board. The potato stuff was very delicious. A special mention about our co passengers: They were a group of 20 members consisting of all age groups from 3 different generations boarded at Vikramgarh Alot and were heading to Mysuru to attend a marriage. Even though we were separated by region and religion, by this time they have treated us like part of their own family. Home food was always there to offer from their side and had some conversations. Thanks to railways for giving "family wali feeling" for millions of passengers on daily basis. In mean time, complete darkness had prevailed and we were cruising through the forest region near Sirpur. Sirpur Kaghaznagar was negotiated at 6:47PM(7 minutes late) and Bellampalli at 7:16PM(1 minute late). We reached Mancherial at 7:34PM. Mancherial being my best friend's home town, I wasted no time in taking a dig on him in whatsapp.
Conversation:
Me: *PIC* Hey, I am in Manchuria
Friend: Greater Mancherial
Me: Yeah yeah Gobi Manchuria
*Civil war begins*
While the banter was going on, we were already cruising through the mighty Godavari river. The word mighty is in reference to the span of the river. Real sense of mightiness can be experienced at Rajamahendravaram. After crossing Ramagundam cautiously, there was no looking back as all the stations were thrashed without mercy all the way till Komatipalli. After slowly skipping Wadepally lake, we entered platform 3 of Kazipet. After departing from Kazipet at 9:13PM(13 minutes late) we crossed WAP4 led Charminar express and Kakatiya fast passenger led by WAP4 at Naskhal. Our train had considerable slack in Kazipet-Kacheguda stretch and we were thrashing all the stations at MPS.
Zangaon: 3 minutes early
Wangapally: 20 minutes early
Pagidipalli Junction: 29 minutes early
Bibinagar: 32 minutes early
Ghatkesar: 35 minutes early
Charlapalli: 41 minutes early
Moula Ali Bypass Cabin: 40 minutes early, where we waited for couple of trains to cross before switching to Bypass line
Moula Ali Gate: 22 minutes early
Vidya Nagar: 13 minutes early
Even though we crawled all the way from Moula Ali bypass cabin till Kacheguda outer, we were 10 minutes early and waited for entry on to the platform. After killing 5 more minutes, we were given the starter to occupy the platform.
Wow... a trip started with 1 minute late departure has finally ended with 1 minute before arrival at Kacheguda.
Booked an UBER cab and reached home at 12:30AM with lots of memories :)

On 22nd of December when the arms of the clock formed a vertical outstretched straight line, it was time for me to shut down the system at my workplace and quickly switch my mind into travel mode. The first hurdle to cross was to deal with the regular evening traffic jams on ever under repair Hyderabadi roads and reach home as early as possible and luckily, stars were on my side. Once at the home, it was time for packing the bags and a trip with parents means, an extra pack consisting of snacks and food just enough to fill the black hole throughout the journey without relying on outside food. Exactly 15 minutes before the change in date, UBER cab service was ready at our door step to take us to the third important station of Hyderabad which is designed with Gothic architecture.
On reaching Kacheguda, the customary action to be performed was to get connected to RAILWIRE. With silence prevailed and the darkness dominating the midnight hours, my body started wandering on the empty platform no.1 of the station like a headless chicken. Just when yawning started to win the battles, a faint honk of a white stallion refilled all the lost energy in me. It was time for an hour late running counter part of my train 12976 to come and occupy its customary platform no.2. The real sense of excitement erupted when a milky white beauty without road number marked on side of the loco entered the platform at brisk pace, which means there is a visitor to SCR headquarters. Confirmation came just after few minutes when WAP7 with road number 30485 from Bhilai shed moved towards SC. This locomotive BIA WAP7 30485 spent nearly 20 days in the limits of SCR, SR, SWR and ECoR, before bidding adieu with AP AC Express towards NDLS. After the departure of Mysore bound sibling, the offlink saga was continued by diesel counterpart, when YPR bound Wainganga Express arrived with VSKP twins. Even before Wainganga departed, another white beauty made a slow and silent entry from SC side. This 3 phaser was none other than LGD WAP7 30286 which was supposed to kick off a marathon 1543 KM long journey by hauling my train.
Amidst all these events happening, it was time for all the passengers on PF 1 to get hold of their luggage as MLY twins made a grand entry on to the platform with the 24 coach rake of 12975 MYS-JP Express. After pulling the luggage and dragging our tired bodies to S2 coach, we were greeted by the side lower berth filled with fine sawdust on the track side. Wiping the seat wasn’t a big deal but the real agony struck when we came to know that the tube light in the bay had direct connection and it would remain on throughout the night!! It was a 1998 made coach with no power socket anywhere. All hail the inventor of powerbank to help people like us to deal with such long journeys. Meanwhile the loco change procedure was completed and we departed from KCG with 5 minutes delay. While everyone in the coach preferred to close their eyes and enjoy the dream world, I was busy watching the performance of WAP7 and the skips of MMTS stations through sleeping city of pearls. Right after crossing STPD, the white stallion slowed and started to switch towards Bypass line. Now I decided to take a nap and save the energy for remaining of the marathon journey.
By the time I opened my eyes it was still dark outside and we had already entered the famous trunk line and were halted at SKZR. As usual, both the main lines were blocked by freight which is known to be SCR’s customary practice. After departing from SKZR, we crossed AP AC Exp hauled by GZB WAP4 25004 and slowly, the darkness was scattered as sun started making its presence felt at the horizon. Best part of getting a side lower seat on track side means MPS action and crossings are guaranteed entertainment. Next to cross was AJNI-KZJ passenger hauled by a WAG7 and a dead WDP4D. By the time we reached the outer of BPQ, night was a thing of past. The customary yelling of “Chai chai” and “Coffffeeeee” by the pantry guys has started working as alarm for co passengers. Meanwhile, it was time to say bye bye to SCR and hello to CR, as we entered and occupy the platform of BPQ.
We departed from BPQ 25 minutes late and it was a slow and sedate run till CD. After departing from CD, WAP7 wasted no time in hitting MPS and it was constant high speed action till next halt. After departing from HGT, it was a mixed run consisting of MPS main line skips coupled with loop line skips until we reached SEGM outer. Now it was time for us to negotiate one of the massive curves of IR. Sitting in a coach which is at 20th position from the loco means one can have the view of whole rake of the train by just peeking out of the window while cruising through Sewagram curve. After departing from SEGM, my next significant crossing was with the latest entry of AJNI ELS at that time, WAP7 30499 which was hauling a passenger at Tuljapur. After a nonstop run for an hour, we recovered the little lost time and were standing at the outer of Orange city. All the efforts of covering the lost time went into vain though, when we waited for more than 15 minutes at the outer for clearance. Finally we occupied the platform No.1 of Nagpur and the famous CSTM-HWH mail was standing on Pf No. 3.
After the departure of Mail, our train also got the starter to make the proceedings. As we started gaining speed, we crossed the late running 22694 NZM-SBC Rajdhani hauled by LGD WAP7 30289 with its front panto up. Just when we started skipping the stations at MPS, we had our lunch and decided to take a power nap. By the time I woke up again, we were cruising through the ghat section of Teegaon-Chichonda. The stretch of NGP-ET is always a treat to watch in the daylight, as we cruise though the changing landforms. We were welcomed by original EMD twins from UBL at Amla, where we made a brief unscheduled halt. Right after departure, we crossed WAP4 hauled 22684 Lucknow-Yeshwantpur SF Express (via KCG). After departing from Betul, we entered the ghat section of MJY-DHQ section, which is one of the steepest ghat section negotiated without bankers. It is one of those places in IR where the sound of sliding wheels is the only dominant noise audible in what called as the silence prevailing hills. Just while riding through the series of tunnels and viaducts, we crossed ET-NGP passenger hauled by ET WAG5A 23887. As we exited from this mesmerizing ghat section, we witnessed another crossing at the deserted looking Dharakoh where distant visitor GMO WAG7 27330 was standing with BCNA rake. Again, WAP7 wasted no time in hitting MPS and had an MPS crossing with massively delayed 12724 Telangana Express at Ghoradongari and subsequently overtook 15016 YPR-GKP Express at Barbatpur. After thrashing all the stations at MPS we finally halted at outer of Itarsi. After spending some odd 15 minutes of time, we crossed SBC bound Sanghamitra Express hauled by ET WAP4 22953 and started entering into one of the prominent and critical railway junctions of India by saying Ta-da to CR.
After spending the stipulated time on the platform, our train got the signal to kick start for the remaining journey bang on time. Yet again as observed for the nth time in the journey, we were clicking MPS in no time and continued the same till made the scheduled halt at Hoshangabad. Just after the departure, we crossed LTT bound Kamyani Express hauled by ET WAP4 25021. Now it was time to sit back and enjoy the beauty of nature as it takes the center stage with the setting sun in the backdrop. First it was time to relish the view of the mighty Narmada river, which was followed by the start of Budni ghat section. Unlike the Mahadev hills ghat section on Satpura range which was steeper but lasted few kilometers, this one on Vindhyanchal range is a bit lengthier with lot of massive curves. After cruising through the beautiful terrain we again started hitting MPS and there was no looking back. Just when we were skipping railfanning heaven Misrod at MPS, someone among thousand odd passengers pulled the chain, resulting in the halting of the train in no man’s land. From here we were slowly dragged into Habibganj station where we crossed with HBJ-JBP JanShatabdi hauled by a WAG7. After making a 20 minutes delayed departure we occupied Platform No.3 of Bhopal, way before scheduled time, all thanks to slack devatha. Twilight has struck by then and while we were killing time, LGD WAP7 30317 pulled the rake of 15016, which was overtaken by us at Barbatpur on to the Platform No.2. Both the trains made a parallel exit from the main station of the capital of MP. There was a sense of excitement in me when I realized that this is going to be my 1st ride ever in WR territory. But this excitement didn’t last long as there were many stern looks from co passengers since I was constantly peeking out of my window, the only window in the whole coach which remained open on the night of chilly winter solstice day. With utter disappointment I closed the window and had the early dinner. The run was sedate post Bhopal and we crossed UJN-BPL passenger hauled by BRC WAG5A 23319 at Sujhalpur. This was the final crossing observed for the day as I decided to give rest for the body. We reached Ujjain whooping 25 minutes before the scheduled time and all the sleeping passengers woke up at once when a bunch of college students who boarded at BPQ and heading to Indore created chaos as they were supposed to alight here and half of them didn’t even knew where to get down. After a half an hour halt we departed on time from Ujjain and everyone again covered themselves with heavy blankets but for no reason I remained awake though.
Right at 12AM, when our train was burning tracks on the speed heaven stretch of BRC-MTJ stretch, messages started flooding in whatsapp. After replying to all of them, I switched off my phone and decided to sleep for remaining few hours of the journey. After having a stop start kind of sleep, I finally woke up at 5:30. By that time, majority of the passengers in the coach started preparing themselves to alight at Durgapur and I was silently peeking out of the closed window. Amidst the passengers noise, came a faint sound from Side Upper berth saying, “Happy birthday Sai”. Then I looked up towards my Dad and obliged the wishes with a smile, the smile which wasn’t quite there while acknowledging those whatsapp messages. We were cruising towards the Pink City at sedate pace and reached the penultimate stop at 5:45. We waited at Durgapur for the crossing with 22982 SGNR-KOTA SF Express and as expected, the Kota bound superfast entered on to the platform with BGKT hunk in LHF mode in lead. Controllers wasted no time in giving starter to our train and on par with white stallion from LGD, the diesel counterpart from BGKT displayed its raw power while we were cruising towards the ultimate halt. Once after joining with the line coming from Delhi side, we slowed down for one final time and crawled at steady pace. We crawled crawled and literally crawled till 6:30, when our train was finally halted on PF4 of Jaipur junction. After getting down at Jaipur, it was an amazing experience to witness complete domination of diesel locomotives ruling like emperors far away from those humming electric locomotives and obstructions of view created by the catenary jungle.

puts away all stations at MPS of 120 kmph. Once Balharshah is reached, we are admitted into pf3 after some waiting at the Wardha bridge. Post the zonal change over, the run is maintained well up to Sewagram and further up to Ajni home. What could have been a huge before time entry into Nagpur is reduced to a 5mins BT crawl into pf1. Part 2 coming soon, stay tuned.
