It is a useful concept though. It reduces wear and tear on locomotives, improves the fuel efficiency and provides better acceleration too and is particularly well suited to this train's halt pattern. ( The locomotives still young though. They are barely 20 years old)

TT of this train has so much slack to take care of that only. For every 150 kmn travelled there is slack of 30- 40 minutes just to cover the time. If single loco has done that in past for the same train there is no reason it cannot do it now. A wdp -4b/d is also a better option indeed as it is more fuel efficient and powerful
It's not about a single loco being unable to do it. It's about what happens behind the scenes while a single loco is hauling it. A single WDM3A hauling a train with such a schedule would experience much more wear and tear than any other loco and the repeated notching up and down of the train will also result in an increased rate of failures as it would stress out the internals. A single loco can do the job, but only barely so. Twin charge would greatly reduce the stress on the locomotive. A single WDP4 can do the job, but a twin charge would always provide much better acceleration than a single loco haul, particularly for the longer rakes. Earlier... more...

Not necessarily. Narmada express is a rather extreme case with average distance between stops of only 10km. With SF trains both options ( EMD vs Twin ALCO) are more or less evenly matched and there is no clear-cut 'best' option and each zone tends to prefer it's own options depending on their style of operations and local track/journey conditions. The southern zones have always preferred twin ALCO links for their 24 coachers and important trains, while the northern zones tend to use EMD links for their 23/24 coachers. ... more...
Both options have their own merits and de-merits, but they are more or less evenly matched. It's rather hard to make a strict conclusion as to which is better.
