Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday said at present Rs 23,000 crore would be required to complete 13 ongoing railway projects and a few sanctioned projects that would be taken up in the state in the near future.
“However, considering the fact that a long time is required to complete the railway projects, the costs frequently escalate and, therefore, at least `1,00,000 crore will be spent by the time we complete all projects,” he added. He was speaking at a programme organised to commission the recently completed Chikballapur-Kolar railway line and flag off a Bangalore and Kolar train in Chikballapur.

said he will explore the possibility of undertaking time-bound projects as suggested by Chief Minister Siddramaiah to avoid the frequent cost escalation and to ensure that the projects are completed at the earliest. “Now the state government has come forward to give the required land free of cost and bear 50 per cent of the cost for the proposed coach factory near Kolar. Hence we will also sanction some money in the supplementary budget for the project and ensure that it is taken up at the earliest,” he added.
Expressing his dissatisfaction over the lack of proper rail connectivity in different parts of the state, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said: “The state has the highest number of railway ministers. Yet, our railway network is lesser than that of neighbouring states and northern states. Karnataka is the only state that is willing to fund 50 per cent of the project costs for the new railway lines and give the required land free of cost. We have identified 1,400 acres for the proposed coach factory near Srinivaspur and we are willing to fund Chikballapur-Gowrib idanur project too.”
Union Petroleum Minister M Veerappa Moily requested the CM to expedite the process to set up DVG University in the 200 acres that is acquired near Hoskote. Moily also requested the Railway Minister to ensure that the Chikballapur-Puttaparthi railway line is taken up.
Minister K H Muniyappa requested the CM to expedite the land acquisition process to ensure all the railway projects are completed on time.
The gauge conversion works on the 87 km railway line between Chikballapur and Kolar has been completed at a cost of `440 crore and was taken up on cost sharing basis. Besides connecting the two district headquarters - Kolar and Chikballapur - the railway line passes through the important towns like Chintamani, Shiddlaghatta and Srinivasapur in the region.

Factory expected to generate 5,000 jobs, improve economy
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday announced that the State government would provide Rs. 700 crore — half of the cost of a rail coach factory to be set up near Kolar, and also 1,200 acres of land free.
He was speaking after the inauguration of the new broadgauge railway line between Chickballapur and Kolar and the flagging-off of the inaugural special train between the two district headquarters at Chickballapur.

Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Industries and Lok Sabha member from Kolar K.H. Muniyappa had been urging the government to share half the project cost and provide land free for the coach factory.
The proposal was announced in the 2011-12 Railway Budget when Mr. Muniyappa was the Minister of State for Railways.
Mr. Siddaramaiah said that he had to yield to Mr. Muniyappa and make an early announcement about the State’s participation in the project as the latter used to call him frequently about the project. The coach factory is expected to generate about 5,000 jobs and improve the economy of the backward regions in Kolar district.
More projects
Railway Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge said that 14 railway projects were in the offing in the State and they would require an investment of over Rs. 23,000 crore.
The Ministry is prepared to expedite the projects if the State government provides sufficient funds towards its share of project cost and also give land free, Mr. Kharge said.
The Railway Minister too complimented Mr. Muniyappa for his persistence in following up with development work and said that the latter had brought in many railway projects to the State. He said that the new line would benefit 11 taluks in the districts of Chickballapur and Kolar.
He said that the Chickballapur-Kolar line, which had been sanctioned just Rs. 100 crore out of the project cost of Rs. 450 crore till 2009, received a fillip thereafter due to the consistent efforts of Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister and Lok Sabha member from Chickballapur M. Veerappa Moily, Mr. Muniyappa and himself. The balance amount, including the State government’s share, was released fast and the project was completed in three years, Mr. Kharge said.
The new Kadur-Chikmagalur line would be opened for rail traffic on November 19, Mr. Kharge announced.
Mr. Moily said that he had continuously been following up the issue of new line with the State government as well as Ministry of Railways.
Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies and district in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao was present.

CHIKKABALLAPUR: To reduce congestion in Bangalore, the government has decided to develop Chikkaballapur as a satellite city, chief minister Siddaramaiah said on Friday. Steps will be taken to improve road connectivity, sanitation and water facilities in the town, he said.
The CM was speaking at the inauguration of the rail service between Chikkaballapur and Kolar. Saying that all pending railway projects in the state will be cleared on a priority basis, he hoped that Karnataka will occupy a prime slot in railway transport in the coming years.
Railway minister Mallikarjun Kharge said the

railway coach factory to be set up near Srinivasapur in Kolar district will provide jobs to over 5,000 people. The government has agreed to provide land for the factory, slated to come up for Rs 1,400 crore. Adequate funds will be allocated for the project in the supplementary railway budget, the minister said.
Chikkaballapur-Kolar link
The Chikkaballapur-Kolar rail line is part of the Yelahanka-Bangarpet narrow gauge line introduced by the Mysore maharajas. It was taken up for gauge conversion under the government's uni-gauge policy. Though the stretch between Yelahanka and Chikkaballapur was completed way back in 1996, the one between Kolar and Bangarpet was ready in 1998. Since then, there had been a persistent demand to complete the 85km-stretch between Kolar and Chikkaballapur. The project, which was delayed owing to fund crunch, has now been completed for Rs 440 crore. At present, only one trip each from Bangalore and Kolar has been planned.
