In terms of travel by Garib Rath, you will find it very comfortable. But you have to rent the bed roll @ Rs 20. Book it as soon as you board. There is Pantry service and the toilets are clean/cleaned well with soap and tissue paper available. Also there is running status displayed inside the coaches. Well, it's just like any other train with2/3AC except that you pay for the bed roll. It's a fully airconditioned train, and speeds are quite good, and generally on time. Good wishes.

There is train number mismatch in blog entry. 2611 train runs only on saturdays from Chennai and hence no run on 6.1.2010 wed.

However, the blogger seems to know about train No. 2621. For any intermediate delays, One has to depend upon food procurement in pantry car by Rlys. As such, no free coupons on train 2621 for any delay.

HOW is the chair car travel from Chennai to New Delhi. Is it comfortable. How is the sleeping

Dec 16 2009 (09:40AM)

@first blogger:
Should be fairly comfortable; but tiring. Good question actually. CC on such a long journey can be strenous. As for sleeping, well, you have to make your own arrangements (please don't take this as a serious answer), you can use the aisle with discomfort to other travellers.. I guess others in the CC will be doing the same. If the CC is not crowded, then you can use one method which I used to do in the former AC Expresses between Delhi-Calcutta and Delhi-Bombay - use the empty chairs next to you, wriggle as much as you can under the arm rest, and crouch and SLEEP. :) I have done this on Economy class in the international airlines.. Good luck and good wishes.

@first blogger:
Chair cars used to be the norm before discovery of 3 tier ac. people used to travel in CC to many far off places without asking questions like whethr it will be comfortable or not. they used to adjust and as the previous blogger said sleep in various positions. Of course it used to recline a bit. rajdhanis had CC instead of 3ac and all major sf trains had 1/2 CC in place of 3ac. now CC is used only for short travel in trains like shatabdi & more recently in GR.
Still GR CC is more comfortable than erstwhile CC of olden days. You can sleep if the side seats are empty or choose a Window seat for more comfort of sliding/keepng your arm/pillow to rest on window and sleep.

Harpreet,
Chennai garib is on an average around 2 hours late. Last Monday, 13th Apr it reached at 2230. Also please see that trains for Madurai are from Chennai Egmore and Garib Rath reaches Chennai Central, so please do factor for that as well.
If under unfortunate circumstances you miss the train, take a late arrival certificate from the station manager. After producing that u have 2 options
a. book in the next available train without paying any charges.
b. refund of money for chennai - madurai leg as you missed the train due to late arrival of the NZM - MAS train.
There is no night train available and the A/c buses leave at 10 pm, so basically if u miss the train u cannot reach at 9 am.
Check some other day and some other train..

i am not Harpreet, but great information. I didn't know that there is such a thing as "late arrival certificate", whereby I can get a refund. thanks for the info.
As for Harpreet, I don't think he will have time for refund, etc. Since it is more important for him to reach Madurai by next morning, I think he should try for the bus option. Pandian express is too much of a risk.

Sirs,
Wha is this Late Arrival Certificate (LAC)? I have also never heard about it. I know the rule of Railways that it does not guarantee any connection and if you loose one, you are at your own fate; Indian Railway does not owe any responsibility.
Yes, when deaprture is delayed by more than 3 Hrs. at your station of commencement of journey, full refund is granted.
Can any body, in the interest of the public at large put more light in LAC?
Thanks,
S. K. Jain

Mr Jain, I came to know about the rule when I could not catch Brindavan Express for MAS - SBC due to late arrival of TN Exp at MAS by about half an hour. I was asked to collect a Late Arrival Certificate(LAC) from the station manager, which was given as a separate slip. This is sometimes ticket itself endorsed by the station manager acknowledging the delay in train by keying in the actual arrival time at the station. This has to be done within 3 hours of arrival of the delayed train.
On producing the LAC and the ticket I was able to book MAS - BLR leg in the next available train free of cost at the reservation counter(I had an option to take refund for the leg I had not travelled(that was what I meant when I said full refund)). Please see this is applicable only on onward journeys as was my case
Ticket 1 2621 TN Exp NDLS - SBC resv upto MAS
Ticket 2 2639 Brindavan Exp MAS - SBC Travel Ticket Authority PNR No of Ticket 1(could not undertake onward journey as first leg train was delayed)
Had I booked NDLS- MAS and MAS - SBC as separate tickets(not an onward journey) then there is no connection between the two trains as per Indian Railways rules and hence they do not owe any responsibility and you will not be refunded the ticket amount or acomodated in the next available train. Hope this helps.
-Bharat Jain

I would like to add that accomodation in next available train is subject to availability in case of an onward journey.
In a non-onward journey standard cancellation rules after the departure of the train will apply and there will be absolutely no connection between the two journeys.

thanks for the info. in fact many passenger interest rules are there but no one comes to know of it because it is a secret. Is this LAC written in the time table. I am sure it will not be. Thanks once again.

Apr 19 2009 (10:43PM)
Reply    Add Bookmark  Remove 0
Train Time table does mention this refund rule although it does not use the word LAC and does not say you can book in next available train free of cost whereas actually you can do so, quoting from pg 259 of Train Time Table(hard copy Jul 2007- June 2008) under Refund Rules section
I could not continue my onward Journey due to late running of connecting train. Can I claim a refund?
After deducting fare for the travelled portion, you will be refunded balance fare. To claim this refund, you are required to surrender your ticketat the station, within three hours of the actual arrival of the train which has been delayed.

Harpreet,
As given on this site, on average, the Chennai Garib Rath is 2 hours late on the return journey. You can assume it is about 2 hours for Chennai arrival as well.
So you are taking a risk by booking a connection 1.5 hours after Garib Rath's scheduled arrival. Also, Garib Rath arrives at Chennai Central, but Pandian Express (your connection) leaves from Chennai Egmore, so you have to change stations as well.
Train is very convenient to go to Madurai, but here it looks like bus is your only other option. Good luck.

Whether there is pantry or not does not make any damn difference since railways have the history of serving food which can be eaten by cannibals. So pls make arrangements and gud luck for ur journey

can anyone tell me on what basis Railways choose departure times, number of stops, arrival times of new trains? Do they directly ask people's opinions? Do local MPs suggest new trains? How does railways exactly know what people want, how many coaches per train, etc. when they introduce new trains?

This is the best train from vijayawada . very limited halts. unfortunately railway authorities need to think more stops in andhra pradesh such as Khammam. As the train proceeds day time and no major stops it leads to lower occupancy rate.

Probably the fastest way to reach Gudur, Ongole & Vij from Chennai. Good to have it more than one trip per week. Less than 4 hours you can reach Ongole and so far it's on time or a bit early to reach Ongole, Vij. Strongly recommended on a sat day.
