Need to see. Let's hope that extension is announced soon. They said matter urgent and give wide publicity. But till now, no news.
If it extends pretty sure GDG member will be first to know and take pics on the first day at GDG.

I totally agree with you. Being an environmentalist, I feel that electrification is not of much use. Blindfully doing electrification without any proper vision is shear wastage of public money. As the electricity production is majorly carried out through thermal power plants. Rather railways should look for capacity augmentation, increasing passenger amenities, safety and increasing the number of trains on the routes which are underutilized.

Sir, but Electricity generated from Nuclear power plants, windmills and dams doesn't cause any air pollution. Only 65.8% of electricity is produced by fossil fuels. Rest 32.2% of electricity comes from non-fossil fuels. Moreover, government is aiming for lesser dependence on fossil fuels in upcoming years. So pollution is not a really "big" issue in this case.

That's indeed a useful information
Pollution is not the only impact on the environment.
Wind power is only intermittent. We generally get wind power regularly only during the South-west monsoon. While they can be operated in suitable weather during the other times as well, Wind power is essentially a non-continuous one, and is not suitable for railway operations. This is a very clean operation though.
Hydroelectricity does not cause any pollution. But it submerges vast areas of forests and for large distances downstream of the dam, aquatic animal life is severely disturbed. The dams also block migration

routes for fish. Hydroelectricity may be pollution clean, but it has an equally damaging and long lasting effects on the life in the river. Especially in India, where we are increasingly killing off our bio-diversity, more large dams would mean more irreversible destruction. (Just like how roads and railways passing through forested areas are causing thousands of animal deaths a year, dams too lead to the same for aquatic life).
Nuclear power can support the huge electrical loads of a railway network. But it generates a lot of dangerous, radioactive waste. Now, on paper and in textbooks it is easy to mention methods of 'safe disposal', but given how most industries end up disposing waste in an untreated manner, such 'rubbishing' is a big problem for nuclear power.
Renewable sources of energy like Wind power, Solar power etc are not suitable for Railway applications as the Railway would need a continuous, large supply of electricity, which is not possible for these sources. Even if the government stays true to its promise and focuses on reducing the dependency on fossil fuels, for the foreseeable future, railways will continue to derive the bulk of its power from thermal power plants. Building too many dams would also be a bad thing because of their impact on surrounding ecosystems.
And while an electric locomotive does not cause any visible pollution, the thermal power plant supplying the electricity does. When this pollution is taken into consideration, the amount of pollutants released into the atmosphere per electric locomotive is comparable to that of diesel locos.
But again, this is not a one-sided contest. On routes with very high traffic, the overall effects of electric traction are lesser than diesel traction. But on routes with lower traffic (which is the case for any branch lines in the country), there is no point of electrification. Diesel traction will be better for these routes in the long run.
And diesel traction is not the only non-electric modes of traction! Alternative fuels can be explored (RDSO was researching for Fuel cell powered APUs for diesel locos) to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and reducing the emissions. Having a 'self-powered' locomotive is always preferable over a locomotive that depends on an external network to operate. Driving research in such areas would be beneficial in the long term.

That's pretty useful sir. Disposal of Nuclear waste is a big issue, else i guess it is the best electricity source for Railways, right ?
