Non-air-conditioned trains with automatic doors are the need of the hour, not air-conditioned locals, said Central Railway general manager Sunil Kumar Sood on Wednesday.
Citing the example of Kolkata metro, Mr Sood said, “It is being done there, so it is not impossible.” When asked how the volume of passengers between Kolkata and Mumbai can be compared, Mr Sood said, “You must have noticed that the passengers in Mumbai too shut the doors of the local for most of the monsoon and travel in peak hours as well.”
He added, “These rakes will
not be the ordinary rakes as they will have forced ventilation, which will be the key to running them. They will be ventilators of high quality and the windows will be open as well,” said Mr Sood, allaying fears that it would be too stuffy inside the compartment.
This comes after the railway board had only last week given an in-principle nod to two non-air conditioned automatic door rakes after Mr Sood had written to them stating that the CR would refuse to take their share of the 72 Bombardier rakes slated to come this year, if they are not fitted with the automatic doors.
Lata Argade, vice-president of federation of suburban railway passengers said, “If the general manager is planning to go for automated door rakes then I think he should call all the railway associations and discuss it before taking the decision. Maybe we will be able to make him realise that it is not a possibility and if they go ahead with this, they should be ready for the consequences that might occur.” Her contention is that the automated doors will be a safety hazard as people may get injured while trying to board the train while the door shuts.
Suburban Railway Users Consultative Committee (SRUCC) member Subhash Gutpa said, “I think this is the first time that any general manager has thought of doing something out of the box, so we need to give him a chance. If we are able to save some of the 3.5 lakh commuters who die on the tracks, then I welcome the different approach.
Anil Tiwari, a railway expert said that the forced ventilation plan would not work out. “They exist even in the newer rakes, but they hardly ever work,” he said
