Festive Spree
By — Pramiti Roy
Times News Network.

In India, April is the time to celebrate. A time when people across the country celebrate Nature’s bounty with New Year celebrations — be it Baisakhi, Bihu or Nabo Barsho. Joining in with this festive spree, the Indian Railways is also celebrating the 59th Railway Week from April 10 to 16 all over its network.
This week-long celebration is in commemoration of the first train run on Indian soil from Boribander to Thane on April 16, 1853. The Railway Week, which is celebrated every year, provides the Railways an opportunity to review and analyse its performance of the previous financial year, take stock of its present situation and chart out a suitable course of action for the new fiscal year to further improve its services. Also, Railway Week Awards/ shields will be presented during this historic week to recognise and reward the exemplary services rendered by its staff at the national, state as well as divisional levels.
General manager, Eastern Railway, RK Gupta, says, “During this week, the history of Indian Railways, its heritage, passenger amenities and campaign on passenger safety will be on display at Howrah and Sealdah stations and through various print media. Eastern Railway has planned to run 156 summer special trains between Sealdah and Indore, Asansol and Patna, Asansol and Jaynagar, Kolkata and Haridwar, Howrah and Guwahati, Sealdah and Puri, Kolkata and Patna, Howrah and New Jalpaiguri, Kamakhya and Pune as well as Howrah and New Jalpaiguri (premium special train).”
South Eastern Railway (SER) finished financial year 2013-14 on a high by surpassing the revised target fixed by the Railway Board. Some of the new happenings included:
SER’s total freight loading achieved was 134.28 MT, almost 10 MT more than what was achieved last year (an improvement of about 8%). SER surpassed not only the initial target of 130 MT set by Railway Board but also the revised target of 134 million tonnes.
There was record growth in goods as well as passenger earnings in 2013-14 compared to previous year. For the first time, the earnings from carrying freight traffic exceeded 10,000 crore.
As part of summer specials, 21 pairs of “premium” AC superfast specials will ply to Chennai and Yesvantpur in addition to 57 pairs of specials to other
