Apr 24 2014 (22:19)   Basic amenities missing in Dibrugarh

DIBRUGARH, April 23: Dibrugarh is growing but the process cannot be called development. The reservation is over the fact that the buildings may be coming up, malls may be opening and more vehicles may be seen on the streets but the basic amenities necessary for the smooth functioning of a town are missing.
One such long felt need is parking space in and around Dibrugarh. The town was built in a well planned manner by the British but haphazard construction ruled the day in the last few decades, with the order expected in such an old town sorely missing. Streets have not been broadened yet the number of vehicles has grown exponentially. In fact, at several places, buildings have encroached on the
thoroughfares. The streets become clogged on the eve of and during festivals, making vehicular movement almost impossible and causing long traffic jams. However, this is bound to become a daily affair in the near future.
The situation is made worse because of the lack of proper parking lots. The sides of the streets in and around Dibrugarh have become parking zones. One way traffic is allowed on the HS Road, the widest street in the town, because parked vehicles eat up most of the space. Most of the business establishments do not provide parking facilities. Workers as well as customers park their vehicles on the street sides.
When the Bogibeel Bridge is completed and the BCPL becomes functional, the inflow of vehicles to the town is bound to rise. The horrendous situation in the next few years can easily be imagined.
Despite petitions from various quarters to Dibrugarh Municipal Board and people’s representatives at several times, nothing has been done. At a meeting at Marwaripatty during his election campaign, the Congress candidate, Paban Singh Ghatowar, told the gathering that he had tried to solve the problem but was unable to do so because no one has been able to provide the land for parking lot.
However, it is high time that town planners should think out of box and find out a way to address the problem rather than just bemoaning the lack of space.

To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...
