GUWAHATI, April 28 – Subodh Kumar Jain, Member, Engineering, Railway Board inaugurated the launching of the first 125-metre fully welded girder span of the Bogibeel rail-cum-road bridge on April 25 at a ceremony at the construction site, an NF Railway press release stated.
The Bogibeel Bridge will have a total of 39 welded girders of 125-metre span and two shore spans of 32.75 m. The bridge will be the first of its kind in India with fully welded superstructure. This bridge upon completion will comprise double-line railway tracks at the lower deck and a three-lane road on the upper deck.
launching of the superstructure is being done by incremental method of launching and the weight of each girder is approximately 2,000 MT. The superstructure of the bridge is being executed by M/s HCC-DSD-VNR Consortium.
The foundation stone for the 4.94-km-long bridge was laid in the year 2002 and is targeted to be completed by December 2016 at an estimated cost of Rs 5,000 crore. On its completion, the Bogibeel Bridge will dramatically improve the connectivity between the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra river. The bridge is of immense strategic importance and will improve the accessibility to Arunachal Pradesh and other remote parts of the region.
The girder launching ceremony was attended by RS Virdi, General Manager, Northeast Frontier Railway and RK Singh, General Manager, Construction, Northeast Frontier Railway, besides other senior officials from the Railway Board, NF Railway HQ and the construction organisation, the release added.
