There are many IR related apps for mobile phones. I was wondering if there is any app that shows train positions on a given route. Many rail fans love to see crossings / overtaking of trains when they are traveling in a train and such an app showing expected train crossings and overtakings would certainly add to the excitement of rail fanning. There was one called rail radar sometime back which was greatly appreciated by railfans. Sadly, its now history and nothing yet as come up to take its place so far.
Thanks for the info. I just tried to google rail radar for a detailed info and came across this website railradar.railyatri.in. It shows a number of train positions on an India map but it seems that these positions are sent by users on board the train. It is a good initiative but that means only where a user chooses to transmit the info one gets the info. For example if no one is transmitting the data you will not know about the train. Also it shows an all India train position (as much transmitted by users). Whereas, my query or wish was very specific to a given route on which I or anyone may be at a given point of time. For example if I am on board 12423 DBRT - NDLS Raj then I would want to know the positions of train on...

Not the rail radar or rail yatri that I was talking about. This was different, may be other members can chip in if they have some screen shots of the erstwhile website.
I don't think any app (at least one that is accessible to the general public) with the specific functionality you asked is currently available. Only a small number of trains are enabled for GPS based real-time tracking (Depending on the loco link). For most trains, the location is updated based on the last station the train crossed ( as we see in NTES).
