I was comparing air fares between metros (Mumbai-Delhi, Kolkata- Delhi, Chennai-Delhi, Bangalore-Delhi etc) and found out that even fares for travel dates of just 1 week in advance right now are almost equal to 2A fares on Rajdhanis and slightly above normal 2A fares. If you book more in advance, you can even get cheaper fares. Given this scenario, why would anyone travel by train (I am not talking about intermediate passengers) when they can fly and save 90% of the time for almost the same fare. Even 3A passengers can pay slightly more and fly. The Indian government should now focus on aviation as much as they do on railways as air travel is the way of the future. Aviation should now be given lot of importance and rules and regulations should be changed such that it favors air travel. Railways is also important, no doubt.

3A are bulk carriers in AC travel. As long as govt keeps enough difference between fares of 3A and flights, railways will have advantage. Having said that
I think govt. needs to take holistic approach in developing transport sector airways, railways & roadways such that they complement each other. There can be a transport secretary under which coordination among various bodies can take place. So we can develop highways/expressways, high speed/semi-high speed rail, big modern airports for metro cities as well as no frill airports for medium & small cities.

furiously in capacity augmentation in railways(new lines, electrification, gc, doubling/tripling etc.) as well as increase in speed, a semi-high speed diamond grid(160-200 kmph) can do wonders for pan India connectivity.
Typically for metro cities(population 50 lac+) which have distance of 500-700 km we can plan High speed rail(Bullet train) for future when our present and planned airport capacities saturate. Many studies show that upto distance of 700 km high speed rail can compete with airways and can divert most of passengers to itself. For distance more than 1000 km airways gains significantly.
For distance upto 200-250 km it is found expressways are best mode for high speed travel. So routes like Delhi-Jaipur, Delhi-Chandigarh etc. should be developed.

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
