Travelling to Odisha's temple town Puri will get a lot easier from next week.
The East Coast Railway has decided to introduce a weekly special express between Tatanagar and Puri from August 10 for a four-month trial run. If the response is good, the train may make it to the permanent timetable, said officials at Garden Reach, Calcutta, the headquarters of South Eastern Railway (SER).
Speaking over telephone, an SER spokesperson said the Puri express was being introduced to honour a long-time demand of passengers for a direct link to the tourist destination
from Tatanagar. "Primary maintenance (mechanical and technical) of the Puri express would be done by East Coast Railway while they would take care of secondary upkeep (washing and cleaning)," he said.
The up Puri-Tata Weekly Special (08407) will leave Puri on Wednesdays at 9.25pm. The train will reach Tatanagar on Thursdays at 10.45am after a journey of over 13 hours. Between Puri and Tatanagar, its will stop at Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Jakhapura, Sukinda, Harichandanpur, Nayagarh, Jaroli, Banspani, Dongaposi, Chaibasa and Rajkharsawan.
On the return route, the down train (08408) will leave Tatanagar every Thursdays at 12.15pm, its maiden journey beginning on August 11. The train, after chugging along the same route, will reach Puri at 11.45pm the same day.
The 18-bogie train will have one AC-II coach, two AC-III coaches, nine second-class sleepers, four general compartments and two luggage vans. The train will make 15 trips between the two destinations till November 17.
Welcoming the railway decision, a senior functionary of Chotanagpur Passenger Association said it was a pleasant surprise for them. "We were not expecting a train to Puri right now. The new weekly special will be of great help to those travelling to the temple down during the forthcoming festive season," he said.
Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) also gave a thumbs up. "The special train will ease the rush on trains like Purushottam and Utkal Express," said Vijay Anand Moonka, vice-president of SCCI, adding that a sizeable number of businessmen travel to Puri from Jamshedpur at frequent intervals.
Kumaresh Singh, a frequent traveller to Puri, said passengers of Chaibasa and Dongaposi would benefit the most. "Currently, they are required to travel to Chakradharpur to catch the Utkal Express to the temple town," he said, urging the railway authorities to adequately promote the new train.
