It seems like railway has realised the potential benefits of Mumbai Delhi sector
I think this sector alone can give railway huge profit if IR can give 12 hour run time. Basically railway can finish airline business of this sector.

Delhi- Mumbai is very very distinctly the busiest air traffic route of India. with 5.3 lac passengers/month or 18000 passengers per day. This sector can give a large number of premium passengers to High speed trains. If a 200 kmph Semi high speed train can do a real overnight 9-10 hr journey, pessimistically assuming even if one third of passengers switch over to train, it mean 6000 passengers/day i.e. about 6 Full length Rajdhani type trains. (TGV routes on France, the air traffic has fallen to much less than half after their introduction)
Convenience & time saving shall generate additional (new) traffic, also many a.c. class passengers shall be enticed to switch from S/F Express trains to the SHS Train. About

7-10 SH Trains could be operated on the route even with pessimistic assumptions.
Airline business in this sector can never be finished because, company officials in large number go for their official meetings/presentations and return by the same day.The facility which even HS trains can not give.
Next best opportunities in this regard is Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Mumbai-Bangaluru, Mumbai-Goa SHS train.

For 1000+ km long journey trains can't be economical & cheaper at the same time than flights...already all the long distant SL class fares are heavily subsidized &_3A fare just manages to attract profit that too not by any huge margin..plus one high speed train means life risk for so many road users which is totally eliminated in case of flights
