CHENNAI: In a daring attempt, unidentified persons managed to gain entry into a coach in running train in which soiled currencies worth Rs 342 crore was being transported from Salem, a western city in Tamil Nadu, to the state's capital Chennai.
Sources informed that Rs 5.78 crore cash was stolen during the heist. Forensic staff are checking along the railway tracks for clues of the culprit. "Special team formed under Railway police SP Vijayakumar and three DSPs will be assisting him in the investigations" said Ramasubramanian, inspector general of police.

four boxes were found broken, with cash in one of the boxes entirely missing. Another box was half-empty and the third box had been opened, but cash in the box was just left scattered, not missing. This might be because the cash in the last box was of lesser denomination.
The police stations from Salem to Chennai have been alerted and all police inspectors have been roped into the investigation. "The incident came to light when the RBI officials opened the coach on it arrival and found the currencies lying scattered inside," said the IG to media persons.
The currencies were reportedly belonging to a few public sector banks was being transported in a train from Salem to Chennai to hand over to Reserve Bank of India.
It is not yet clear how much of the currencies were stolen and at which spot the thieves managed to sneak out the cash boxes in the nearly 350 kilometer long journey the train took on Monday night.
According to police sources, the heist came to light only after the Salem Express reached Chennai around 3.55 am on Tuesday. A hole, enough for a person to enter, was found on the top of the railway coach in which currencies were carried in 226 boxes.
Sources said the boxes contained soiled currencies collected from various branches in and around Salem. It was being taken to Chennai to hand over to the Reserve Bank of India. The consignment is said to have totally a sum of Rs 342 crore.
The consignment was being transported with heavy security, including by a team headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police. It is unclear how the thieves could had drilled the hole on the roof of the coach, given that the electric cables will be very close above the coach.
Police suspect the burglars could had exploited a few stretches along the route which are not yet electrified. Sources also said the Salem Express was stopped at Virudachalam junction in Villupuram district and the engine was changed as a diesel engine must be fitted since the stretch between Virudachalam and Attur is not electrified.
The train is now stationed in an yard near at Egmore railway station in Chennai. A railway police source said since the cash boxes was being transported in cargo section, it will fall under the jurisdiction of the Railway Protection Force, which will investigate the case.
Police are trying to verify if the train was halted anywhere else during its journey or the thieves had managed to enter the coach before the train began its journey

Not in the slip rake. The rake which starts from SA. Police doubt that the 6 crore cash should have been stolen before VRI as the section is not electrified. Initally they believed that the theft would have occurred at VRI itself as 11064 had LC at VRI. But later on,it was ruled out. Every station between VRI and SA is under surveillance.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
