they were quite common in the years following their import in India. conventional don't have problems because unlike induction motors, DC motors actually have characteristics that match quite well to what you'd expect from a motor used in traction, besides being easy to control, unlike the notoriously difficult control of I.M.
you can go through this report, nicely explains the issues with 3 phasers in India w.r.t. over heating : click here

All these are draw backs of acquiring foreign made Locomotives which have been designed and built according to the condition over there. Why don't the RDSO and Indian Railways design and built Ingenious 3 phase electric locomotive? Aren't they capable of doing that!!!

the people who design are the same guys who graduated copying each other's assignments, so they continue the same tradition there :P
On a more serious note, we don't have the technical know how on that, for some reason. One of the most critical component, the electric drives involved in control of TM, are still imported (this is true in every field that uses drives, they are always imported, no local manufacturing)
there are other issues too, but i am not completely aware of this, but it boils down to this: we don't

More than that, this is a problem with collaboration between IR and the design companies. The original WAM1, WAG1 and IR's most successful loco, the ALCO WDM2 were all imported technologies. The WAM4 was very successful because of the ALCO tri-mount bogies. And IR developed these imported technologies later on.
A complete design from scratch takes a decade for a new traction technology, by which time it might even become irrelevant. It is a common practice to get the initial models from a company that is already well versed with said technology. Even the WAP5 was custom built for IR, with a separate European version also. In this way DLW has done an excellent job of collaboration,

as can be seen with the EMD's and the WDM3D.
CLW on the other hand had some lapses with the 3 phasers and also ignored the WAP4 even though it was completely their own design.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
