In what may be a reaffirmation of the Indian Railways’ quest for speed, Hyperloop One, along with other ultra-high speed railway technology holders, have evinced interest to participate in a meeting called by the national carrier on 2 September.
According to two officials in the ministry of railways, Spanish Talgo, Maglev 2000 USA, Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) Japan, Knorr-Bremse India, Prose from Switzerland and Siemens are the other probable entities who may participate in the one-day seminar.

InfraCircle on 9 June reported the national carrier plans to hold a seminar with ultra-high speed train manufacturers to explore technologies.
The railways, which is losing passengers to roads and airlines, is exploring multiple options to run high-speed trains in India. A bullet train corridor using Japan’s Shinkansen technology is being built between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, and trials of Spanish Talgo have recently concluded. The maximum speed of trains in the country is currently 160km per hour, met by the newly launched Gatimaan Express.
The people’s carrier also issued an expression of interest (EOI) on 1 August, inviting companies to design, build, operate and maintain magnetic levitation train systems for both passenger and cargo transport, as reported by InfraCircle.
According to information available on the website of the railways, the international technical conference, titled Technology for Ultra High Speed Rolling Stock, is being organised by the Institute of Rolling Stock Engineers and Indian Railways Service of Mechanical Engineers Association, along with the Indian Railways and RITES Ltd.
Queries emailed to Hyperloop One, Spanish Talgo, Maglev 2000 USA, Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) Japan, Prose and Siemens, and the spokesperson of the ministry of railways on 18 August remained unanswered. Knorr-Bremse, however, in an emailed reply said it will not participate in the seminar.
Hyperloop is a technology to transport passengers and goods at ultra-high speed in tubes in which capsules are propelled by linear induction motors and air compressors.
“We are expecting these companies to participate and there will be many more as we are expecting participation from industry leaders like these. The EOI (for magnetic levitation) and the seminar are moving in parallel. The EOI is an independent process but the seminar is also a method of engaging. The aim of the seminar is to get educated,” said another government official, who also did not want to be named, adding there are only a handful of people who know ultra-high speed.
“In this seminar, we are looking to get five genuine papers (concepts), which is a tough task,” pointed the second official quoted above.
According to experts, India needs to look at the technologies for the future and consider their feasibility.
“This is a long-term plan and I don’t think it is going to happen in a short period. This is at a very initial stage and it is more about being aware of new technologies, and assessing whether we can use that in India,” said Vishwas Udgirkar, partner and lead, infrastructure consulting, at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP.
The railways’ rationale behind the conference is to garner better understanding of emerging and latest technologies available worldwide in various areas of high-speed rolling stock.
