SURAT: At least 38 well-known companies have evinced interest in the Rs 5,000 crore Surat railway project, tenders for which will be floated next month. Redevelopment will make Surat railway station into an iconic modern structure better than even an airport, railway minister Suresh Prabhu said here on Wednesday.
He was in the city to witness the signing of a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) between railway ministry, Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) and Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) for the redevelopment of Surat railway station into a 61-storey skyscraper which would be a multimodal transport hub in the city. Surat would become first railway station in the country to undergo transformation on PPP basis.

said, "The Indian Railways has the goal of getting one third of its revenue from railway station developments and other non-rail things. Surat would set a benchmark in the country." This is a historic moment as for the first time a local body, a state government and the central government have got together to give shape to something unique, the minister said, describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi a visionary. "Under Modi's leadership, the country would progress and Surat would attain its rightful place as the diamond capital of the world," Prabhu added.
Gujarat's deputy chief minister Nitin Patel said this was a historic day for the country and Gujarat too.
Central government has given Rs 650 crore for the project, he added.
