It is a very pertinent question; the long term goal is to have LHB Coaches only.
There is no Self Generating AC coach with LHB DESIGN. It is impractical to have all LHB trains with two power cars requiring a team of technicians to accompany, and having 2x500 kW capacity each for a total need of
about 200 kW for a three AC coach train.
The development of this type of coach is envisaged with underslung DG set on SLR. This will be for trains that are not fully AC.
There is no motorized bogie available for other than ICF coaches. Therefore, for Self propelled vehicles it has to remain ICF type. ICF Chennai is working on development of a motorized bogie with speed potential of 160 kmph.
The production of LHB coaches in 2015-16 was about 950. It is being enhanced to 1500 in 2016-17. Full conversion from ICF to LHB type coaches will take 4-5 years.
So ICF coaches will continue for some more time maybe a decade.

"200 Kw for 3 AC"
and on what do fans and lights in sleeper coaches run?? gobar?? :P
the underslung experiment failed before, but IR still wishes to persist with it. While the whole world is moving away from SG as it is inefficient, increases weight of rolling stock and is susceptible to vibration related failures but the mechanical department still sees merit in that

may be some mistake....

To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...
