Nagpur: Low on occupancy, the superfast air-conditioned trains to Amritsar and Pune have not been regularized even after over two years of their announcement in the 2014 Railway Budget.
The weekly air-conditioned train to Nagpur-Amritsar and Nagpur-Pune was announced on July 8, 2014 by then railway minister Sadananda Gowda on passengers' demand.
However, both the trains — Nagpur-Pune-Nagpur (22123-22124), and Nagpur-Amritsar-Nagpur (22125-22126) — are being operated as special trains by getting extension from the headquarters time to time. Interestingly, the trains already figure in the timetable but operate as special train with numbers
02123/02124 & 02125/126.
When sought to know the reason for the train being operated as specials, Central Railway senior divisional commercial manager (SrDCM) KK Mishra said, "It is purely the Railway Board's decision to regularize it. We are ready to operate."
However, railway sources said one of the reasons for not running these trains as regular ones was occupancy factor. "There is 35%-40% occupancy for Pune while for Amritsar it is even low," they said.
"The railways announces new trains by first operating them as specials to clear wait list in the name of festival rush. Such trains are later regularized looking into the response," railway officials said.
However, passengers have been complaining that as the trains are not regularized, there is complete indiscipline on punctuality and many times cleanliness.
On Tuesday, there was a mess when Nagpur-Pune special, which leaves the city at 7.50pm, was missing from display boards even at 8pm.
"It was only when passengers raised alarm they were told that the train is 15 minutes late. Later, the display boards showed it was two hours late," said an aggrieved passenger Nitin Khade, travelling in B5 coach to Manmad.
"We have been told that the special train, despite paying more, never runs on time. When we started for station, the train was right time," Khade added.
However, passengers were told that on Tuesday, as the train arrived two hours late from Amritsar, it was rescheduled for Pune. The train left at 10pm.
"Delayed arrivals sometime hamper primary maintenance of the train, but it doesn't happen always. We are ready in case of delays," said a senior mechanical department officer.
"There are issues of clean toilets. In A1 coach, toilets raised a stink on Tuesday. Moreover, unclean linen was supplied. A formal complaint (No. 221289) was lodged at Pune station by my sister on Wednesday," said Anand Shrivastav.
"It is really a pity that despite Nagpur having political clout in the state as well as Centre, people have to suffer," said Shrikant Paturkar from B1 coach.
