MUMBAI: Work on Metro 5 and 6 is expected to begin in 2018 as authorities aim to take Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) to all corners of Mumbai, Thane and neighbouring Kalyan.
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, headed by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis approved Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro-5 and Lokhandwala-Jogeshwari-Vikhroli-Kanjurmarg Metro-6 corridors.
The 24-km long Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro-5 corridor will have 17 stations while the 14.5-km long Lokhandwala-Jogeshwari-Vikhroli-Kanjurmarg Metro-6 corridor will have 13 stations.
these projects shall be placed before the state cabinet for government approval. Following this, tenders will be invited.
Chief minister's office tweeted, "it took 8 years for previous govt to approve 10 km of metro network but now, with this,we have approved 13 times more network in just 2years."
Metro 6, a crucial East-West corridor, will help decongest JVLR, SV road and Link road. Both, Metro 6 and 5, will also take load of suburban railway systems on CR as well as WR.
Metro 6 will spur development in Thane-Kalyan-Bhiwandi belt which has poor connectivity by road transport.
CM said Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be propared to connect Dahisar to Mira road via Metro. The stretch between Mira road and Virar has witnessed boom in population due to cheaper housing options. However, this has led to overcrowding in trains in this belt because which there is higher percentage of accidents on this stretch due to falling down from overcrowded train compartments
Besides these metro projects, two more important projects were also approved by the Authority.
MMRDA spokesperson Dilip Kawathkar said, " Rs.194 crore were approved to set up 500 wi-fi hotspots in the city of Mumbai. The on-ground work of identifying 500wi-fi hotspots in the first phase in the city will be carried out by the Maharashtra Information and Technology Corporation under the aegis of the Directorate of Information and Technology."
The Authority also approved Rs.259 crore for the widening of the Rail Over Bridge at Kopri, Thane (East) for the improvement of chaotic traffic situation there.
He said, "The existing 2+2-lane bridge will give way to a new 4+4-lane bridge with service roads."
The chief minister also launched the logo conceptualized for Mumbai Metro Corridors.
