Work on the city’s third coaching terminal near the Baiyappanahalli railway station is all set to kick off soon. The project, aimed at decongesting the Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna (city) and Yeshwantpur terminals, will help start new trains from the city.
Ashok Gupta, chief administrative officer (construction), South Western Railway (SWR), Bengaluru told DH that the work tender was awarded just two days ago. "Phase I involves construction of three platforms, one pit line (used to clean coaches and for maintenance) and minimum station facilities for trains to originate and terminate here,” he said. The Baiyappanahalli station, which is close to the Metro station, city and inter-state bus stations, is touted to be the next transit hub. The SWR also owns nearly
80 acres of land which extends up to Banaswadi. An official from SWR said that the civil work would begin in 15 days.
"It’s a Rs 15-crore work, which is part of the Rs 116-crore project that involves developing the station into a full-fledged terminus,” he said. Besides decongesting the two terminals, the project is key to introduce suburban rail. Krishna Prasad, a retired central government employee, said several inter-state trains could be terminated at the Baiyappanahalli terminal, instead of running all the way to Yeshwantpur and city stations, which are getting saturated. "This will give space to introduce new trains as well as the suburban rail project,” he noted.
Lokesh T P from Karnataka Railway Vedike urged SWR to convert the pit lines at the Yeshwantpur and city stations into platforms once the Baiyappanahalli terminal is ready. "The government should seriously exploit the rail resources. This can considerably reduce vehicle load on the road. People on the outer ring road, especially, can use trains,” he said.

To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...
