MUMBAI: The car shed for Metro III will come up in Aarey, reiterated chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
"We have two to three sites in mind. The land we have allotted for the Metro is quite sufficient for a double-deck car shed and a stabling yard.In case we need to expand, we shall do so on the other side (Royal Palms land)," he said.
The state government had initially allotted 30 hectares at Aarey Colony for the card shed. Following protests, it was scaled down to 20.8 hectares. However, in its objectionssuggestions to the
eco-sensitive zone around the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the government has proposed exclusion of 62 hectares for the car shed.
Fadnavis said it was surprising there were no protests when slums mushroomed in Aarey or when land was allotted to builders. At least five builders have constructed within Aarey , he said. "The Metro will reduce air pollution and also carbon footprint. We will not only transplant trees but also plant more trees."
Citizens have opposed the construction of the car shed in the city's lung. NGOs Vanashakti and Aarey Conservation Group have filed an appeal before the National Green Tribunal, Pune Bench, to declare the entire Aarey colony as an eco-sensitive zone. The final notification for the ESZ is yet to be issued by the Union ministry of environment and forests.
Fadnavis said once the entire Metro network is commissioned in the city , it would take only an hour to travel from one point to another. The government is investing Rs 1 lakh crore in infrastructure in the Mumbai region.
D Stalin, director, Vanashakti, said the government has announced Metro routes from Ghatkopar to Thane, Jogeshwari to Vikhroli. "All the three routes will be best served by a car shed at Kanjurmarg. Why does the government not use the salt pan land where it is planning affordable housing for the metro car shed as well. It will benefit those who come to live there as well as others," he said.
He said another barren plot at Kalina too can be used. "Why this insistence on locating the car shed at Aarey? Also the metro in Delhi has not reduced air pollution. This will not happen unless public transport replaces cars on roads," he added.
DP to be passed next year, says Fadnavis
CM Devendra Fadnavis said the BMC's delayed development plan will be approved by the state government before December 2017. The key to avoid illegal construction and change of reservation is that development plans are approved on time, he added. "We will approve the DP in less than six months after we receive it from the BMC," said Fadnavis.Only 20-30% salt pan land to be used'
Fadnavis said with only 33% of the area in Mumbai available for construction, there was a need for salt pan land to be opened up for affordable housing. The government is going to use only land that is buildable and not touch salt pan land that is under CRZ, wetlands, mangroves."How can we build on land that is protected by law? Only land that is useable, which is 20-30% of the total salt pan land, will be used," he said.
Fresh push for Dharavi redevpt
The state government refloated tenders for Dharavi redevelopment thrice and hasn't received any response. Now that they are making some changes to the redevelopment model approved by the committee of bureaucrats, the project can be hastened, said Fadnavis. The redevelopment of the BDD chawls, stuck for over 10 years, will begin in 2017.

At last the decision on the car shed has been taken. Mumbai Suburban/Metro is already very much delayed and intracity rail travel in Mumbai is an ordeal, especially during peak hours.
Fast decisions and fast action/construction is required to give justice to Mumbaikars, because justice delayed is justice denied.
Mumbai needs to preserve its main green zone too. Greenery can be established in Constructed area as well. Great Mumbai architects can give great schemes/idea if given opportunity to make up for the losses.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
