The Indian Railway has found a not-so-noble way to propel Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Swacch Bharat Mission'. The Railway Ministry in association with NGO Sulabh International will be roping in school children to clean its railway stations across the country.
STUDENTS TO CARRY OUT SANITATION WORK
Every Sunday 300-odd students, wielding brooms in their hands, will be cleaning up the railway platforms and station premises. The NGO will be taking up the matter with station masters of all railway stations and every weekend students from one school in the city will

be carrying out sanitation work. So far 164 "students' clubs" have been formed by the NGO in 20 states of the country. It further plans to cover all the 8,000 railway stations in India.
"We are roping in students to carry out sanitation work at railway stations. We are in talks with school management and stations managers to execute the plan across the country. This will help generate awareness among young children about sanitation and hygiene," said Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International, who was appointed the brand ambassador for Swacch Rail Mission on Wednesday. Pathak added that the children will be given certificates on social work that will help them in future. INDIAN RAILWAYS' CLEANLINESS DRIVE As part of the Swacch Rail Mission, Sulabh has started cleaning and maintenance of five important railway stations. These railway stations are Gorakhpur, Old Delhi, Jaipur, Ahamadabad and Gwalior. Railways have recently undertaken cleanliness drive at its premises across the country with specific focus area for spruce-up such as Swachh Stations (Clean Stations), Swachh Rail Gaadi (Clean Train), Swachh Neer (Clean Water), Swachh Parisar (Clean Complex), Swachh Sahyog (Cleanliness Participation), Swachh Samvad (Cleanliness Dialogue), Swachh Samarpan (Dedication for ensuring Cleanliness), Swachh Aahar (Clean Food). Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said a committee will be formed in each Indian city that will comprise school children, panchayat members, civic bodies and other stakeholders that will take care of the sanitation needs of the city. "The Indian Railways will play a key role in making Clean India a reality," Prabhu said. It is noteworthy that cleanliness of railway stations and trains remains a key concern of the railways. Despite sustained drives, a majority of railway stations remain unhygienic. The railways have a strong workforce of nearly 1.3 million employees. In addition to this, a majority of sanitation related works have been outsourced to private agencies but still the condition railway tracks and stations remain pathetic in most of the cities. In a recent survey on cleanliness conducted by the railways, the railway stations of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were found to be the dirtiest. The survey was conducted at 407 major railway stations in India but despite all initiatives, none of the railway stations in Delhi could make it to the top10 clean stations. The railway stations of Gujarat like Jamnagar, Gandhinagar, Surat and Rajkot were found to be the cleanest while the stations in Bihar were the dirtiest. Even passengers in their feedback have said that lack of sanitation at stations was their biggest concern.

If students come out willingness, it is very good as cleanliness shall be imbibed in their habits and they will grow up into a better citizens. In case they are compelled then such practice will create a feeling of aversion to act of cleansing which is undesirable.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
