CHENNAI: For over a year, regular passengers travelling out of Chennai to southern districts like Madurai and Tirunelveli as well as Kerala on weekends have noticed that one Suvidha special train has always been made available by Southern Railway. The train, announced at least 15 days in advance, invariably has confirmed tickets available, which is a huge relief to these passengers.
This is not by providence. In the past year-and-a-half, battling challenges of coachshortfall and choked lines, railway has mastered the art of planning and running a special train every Friday night on three sectors with massive demand: Chennai-Tirunelveli, Chennai-Trivandrum and Kochuveli-Guwahati. These trains start their return journeys on Sunday night, thereby catering to the demand of weekend travellers who have migrated to
Chennai in the past decade or so, mainly to fuel the IT sector and allied industries.
Suvidha trains, with their dynamic fare model, have been resisted by passengers in many sectors, but in the passengerdense Tamil Nadu and Kerala zone where commuters are willing to shell out extra, these weekend specials have an occupancy of 85% on average. "Suvidha breaks even at 67% occupation, so we are able to get a neat profit on running these trains," a senior official said.
This not only helps Southern Railways earn revenue, but also caters to the burgeoning demand on these sectors. Many passenger associations on these routes have sought new trains, but Indian Railways has maintained a policy of not introducing them. "These specials come as a blessing in disguise. The waiting list on the regular trains reaches around 250 on weekends even outside the holiday season," the official said. It is not as easy as it sounds. As reported by TOI earlier, the zone has a hand-tomouth existence as far as availability of coaches is concerned. Initially , officials had to box together a rake by attaching any coach they could lay their hands on, sometimes using poorly maintained ones. Now the Egmore-Tirunelveli Suvidha special has better quality German-made Linke Hoffman Busch (LHB) coaches.
Still, this isn't enough. The zone has sent a proposal for another special for the KeralaNorth-east sector, which caters to the huge influx of migrant workers. "We have also requested for a Mangalore-Trivandrum and overnight Bengaluru-Coimbatore train," the official said.

Present KCVL - GHY Special has pathetic punctuality. Yesterdays' service has been rescheduled by some 20 hours. Instead of 1200 on 6/11, it will leave @ 0800 on 7/11! As per NTES, it actually left @ 0825 today!!

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
