Overcrowding in some trains will reduce as Western Railway (WR) has decided to introduce fourteen 15car services before this month-end.
WR had first introduced 15-car services on its suburban section in 2009. Of the 1,322 trains per day on WR, 30 are 15-car. The last time 15-car services were added on WR was in March 2013.
A WR official said that the first 15-car service will originate from Virar around 6.30am. The introduction of more 15-car services will mean that they will not halt at stations like Grant Road, Charni Road and Marine

Lines due to short platforms.
WR's accident review committee, which was set up on the instructions of Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu after a video of a youth falling from a running train when viral last November, had recommended introduction of more 15car rakes to reduce overcrowding.
Introduction of more 15-car services will increase the carrying capacity by 25% per rake.
WR had augmented services in October to reduce the load in the Andheri-Virar belt. It had introduced four services each in the Up and Down directions; 10 services were al so extended, including four in the Up direction and six in the Down direction.

WR introduced first 15-car services in 2009.
Today, after 7 years only 30 trains out of total 1322 trains i.e. just 2% are 15 car service!!
It is a great opportunity for snail to take pride in its speed!!

Dear friend, Mumbai Suburban Railways are one of the best in the world, if evaluated in totality

(5) this network held head high with pride when it was giving decent revenue surpluses, a unique feat in the world where govt invariably subsidise intra city rail travel. The extremes of polpulist steps (no fare rise for 10 yrs) caused the profit making suburban system into a loss making one. Even a modest and digestible increment of 5% per annum in fares during that period, could have avoided the current mess.
(6) Earlier Japanese experts visiting to study and suggest improvements, were astonished to see how such diversity and volume of traffic is handled with given technology and network.
So any improvement is very difficult in the present network. Augmentation through new tracks etc. is also extremely difficult, because at Mumbai land/space comes at extremely high premium.
