CHENNAI: Commuters could, in a couple of years, be travelling above the congested roads of north Chennai to the rest of the city as Chennai Metro Rail has floated tenders for construction of elevated corridor for 9km phase-1 extension from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar. Work to build a 2km tunnel, as part of the project, is already under way. The extension project is planned for completion by 2019.
CMRL has floated tenders for construction of a part of the elevated stretch in north Chennai at Toll Gate and Wimco Nagar. It includes building of columns and pile cap that will hold the elevated viaduct for a stretch of about 3km near Toll Gate and Wimco Nagar. The total elevated line is about
7km with six stations.
While the line alignment plan and location of the piers would be provided by CMRL, the contractor is expected to handle identification and shifting of utilities at the location where the foundation would be laid, make detailed traffic diversion plan in consultation with the city traffic police and all associated works for a stretch of about 3km between Toll Gate and Wimco Nagar.
The phase-1 extension project, which was approved by the Central government earlier this year, is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 3,770 crores.
CMRL has also released a report on the preliminary investigations conducted at the project site on soil and sub-soil water condition. The study was necessary for laying of foundation for elevated stretch and also for tunnel boring purposes. While Chennai's soil has mostly clay, shale and sandstone, ground studies have shown sandy areas like Tiruvottiyur and New Washermenpet.
Construction for 2km underground stretch started after chief minister J Jayalalithaa laid the cornerstone in July. Preliminary work of the project started towards the end of 2015, much before it received Centre's nod for fund allocation. Metro officials began land acquisition process for the construction of the line and issued notices to residents who had objections. Officials wanted to clear all the hurdles for construction so that work could begin immediately once the project was cleared by the Centre. Officials said as the viaduct for the elevated corridor would be wider than the busy stretches of north Chennai and its construction may cut into the frontage of houses and shops.
