At least 45 people were killed and more than 100 injured as 14 coaches of the Patna-Indore Express ran off the tracks today near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh this morning.
The incident took place at around 3 am near Pukhrayan, about 100 km from Kanpur. Television images showed several severely mangled coaches piled up against each other.
Northern Central Railways spokesperson Vijay Kumar said that doctors and senior railway officials reached the spot and rescue operations were underway. The cause of the accident was not known immediately.

Kumar said that most of the casualties are reported from the S2 coach which is severely damaged.
District administration along with railway officials are carrying out rescue and relief operations, he added. Buses have been called in to help passengers complete their journey, he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had spoken to Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu who was monitoring the situation closely.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav tweeted that he had asked neighbouring district officials to pool in resources for quicker relief operations.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that the National Disaster Response Force has been also been sent in.
Railway minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted about the accident saying an inquiry had been ordered into the incident and announced compensation for the victims.

Indian railways should order enquiry about this train derailment and take immediately action against those railways employees which cannot doing their job with responsibility. Also those railways officials employees which cannot do their job of maintenance of railway tracks should immediately terminate from the railway job.
