At least 120 lives were snuffed out in the deadliest train accident in six years as the Indore-Patna Express, packed with more than 2,000 people and doing 100km per hour, flew off the tracks, leading to derailment of 14 coaches.
The coaches derailed in the pre-dawn hours, at 3.05am, as the Patna-bound train crossed Pukhrayan in the JhansiKanpur section, about 60km from Kanpur. The high toll was in part due to sleeping passengers being caught unawares and the older coaches in the train. Two coaches, S2 and S3, bore the brunt of the derailment.
fracture' due to expansion of the track in summer and contraction in winter has been identified as the likely cause of the accident that occurred at Hasemau village, between Pukhrayan and Malasa stations. If confirmed, it could point to deficiencies in track management.
The train had 23 coaches, including 12 sleeper coaches, three general seating coaches, four AC3, one AC1and two SLR (seating-cum-luggage) rakes. The driver and guard are safe and their account can help the commissioner of rail safety piece the events together.
The last big rail accident was in May 2010, when Gyaneshwari Express derailed in West Midnapore in West Bengal, killing 148 people.
Medical and accident rel ief trains from Kanpur, Jhansi, Agra and Allahabad were rushed to the spot and rescue personnel, including National Disaster Response Force, brought dozens of passengers to safety.
Railway sources said an extra AC3 coach was added to the train and pointed out that casualties are likely to have been higher due to all the coaches of the train being old ICF ones rather than the modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches. Local villagers and police were the first to reach the spot within 30 minutes of the accident. The train runs between Rajendra Nagar Terminal (Patna) and Indore, and passes through Varanasi, Faizabad and Kanpur, among 17 stoppages.
Later, an Army column and NDRF personnel from Varanasi and Lucknow reached the site to speed up rescue operations. Besides, police teams from neighbouring Orai and Kanpur districts were also deployed. Rail traffic on the crucial Kanpur-Jhansi section that links UP to MP and Maharashtra remained affected till the filing of this report. Many trains were either cancelled or diverted.
Villagers who reached the spot said they removed more than 25 bodies. Very few could reach the site in the first two hours but after daybreak, relatives and friends of the passengers arrived and began a frantic search.
Though the exact cause of the derailment was not ascertained, junior railway minister Manoj Sinha said contraction of tracks, which normally happens in winters, could be one of the reasons. Railway minister Suresh Prabhu said strong action would be taken if anybody was found responsible for the accident.
A total of Rs 12.5 lakh ex gratia was announced immediately from various sources--Rs 5 lakh from UP government, Rs 3.5 lakh from railways and Rs 2 lakh each from the PM Relief Fund and MP government. Rescuers used giant cranes and gas cutters to cut through twisted metal to reach survivors, as Army and IAF ambulances, railway ambulances and vans and buses streamed in to ferry the injured to nearby hospitals. Many of the injured were rushed to Kanpur where hospitals had been kept ready .
“Initially, locals of nearby villages with the help of district police and fire department pulled out the dead and injured. They were later assisted by NDRF, NCC, NSS volunteers and school children. There were many people inside the 14 coaches of the train and death toll will rise,“ ASP Kanpur Manoj Sonker told TOI. Several police teams from neighbouring Kanpur and Orai districts, too, rushed to the spot and assisted the rescue workers.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
