PUNE: The special trains introduced by the railways to clear extra rush have been running late, leaving passengers frustrated.
Most special trains were started a month ago around Diwali. They are still in operation because of the overwhelming response from passengers. But disruptions in time table have led to chaos.
Delays continued even on Monday when two trains were rescheduled by the administration. Both trains left about four to five hours behind the scheduled time. The Pune-Santragachi Express was scheduled to leave at 10.30am but was rescheduled at 2.45pm, while Pune-Bhuj Express was
rescheduled to midnight from 7.50pm.
A source said the trains to Varanasi and Jammu Tawi were the worst-affected. The trains to these destinations left after huge delays of 24 hours and 36 hours. Passengers had no choice but to spend entire night on platforms. Passengers booked on these trains claimed that no alternative arrangements were made to avoid delays.
"One can understand trains running late during monsoon or because of natural calamities. Why are there delays even during normal days?" asked Vikas Bhujbal, a regular traveller.
Harsha Shah of Railway Pravasi Group said holiday special trains were always neglected. The administration does not operate these trains on priority. These trains are sidelined, leading to huge delays. Also, railways do not keep alternative rakes for holiday special trains.
Vikas Narag, who recently travelled to Delhi, said railways charge additional fares for holiday special trains, but services offered always remain below standard. "The trains are not properly cleaned and food is pathetic. In many trains there are no pantry cars," Narag said.
Officials in the railway administration said non-availability of alternative rakes and late arrival of pairing rake was leading to delays in arrivals and departures. Officials stressed out efforts were being made to maintain the time table to ensure trains depart from Pune on time.
"In recent cases of delays, late arrival of pairing rake was the prime reason. Authorities here cannot control running of a train in other divisions. Very little can be done at local level if a train is delayed at other places," said an official in the railway administration.

This has always been the case and railways has never been able to find out a solution to the same. If all zones start giving priority only to their trains, the larger objective of running trains on time for the common passenger is never met
