Government takes steps to increase your safety
Preliminary investigation into the Indore-Patna Express train accident says a fracture in the tracks led to the tragedy, now being described as one of the worst crashes in recent years.
After this accident, the railways is eyeing Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches.
could make your train rides a lot safer, read on and know everything about it.
How many coaches do we have currently?
Currently railways have 5,000 to 8,000 LHB coaches as compared to 55,000 ICF coaches of varying ages.
How do they help?
LHB coaches are designed to be antitelescopic, which means they don’t barrel into each other and don’t topple easily.
What are they made of?
LHB coaches are made of stainless steel, which increases their shock-bearing capacity in case of a mishap. It also makes them lighter, increasing carrying capacity.
These coaches have disc brakes, hence shorter stopping distance.
Physics behind these coaches
The coupling system in LHB coaches reduces the relative motion between two coaches and prevents one coach from mounting the other in case of a mishap.
LHB coaches have a higher average speed of 160kmph and a top speed of 200kmph.
The average speed is 70kmph and top speed 140kmph for ICF coaches.
LHB bogies have a smaller wheel base for negotiating curves.
Which trains have it currently
At the moment some premium trains such as Rajdhani and Shatabdi have LHB coaches.
