The South Eastern Railway (SER) has started taking measures to ease the anticipated winter rush on trains.
Garden Reach, the SER headquarters in Calcutta, on Wednesday notified extension of the Santragachi-Pune AC Superfast Special, introduced in October for Durga Puja, till January 30, 2017.
Tatanagar station manager O.P. Sharma said the winter special train (02822) would leave Santragachi in Bengal at 6.30pm on Saturdays from December 3. It will reach Tatanagar at 10.05pm the same day. The train will arrive in Pune at 2.45am on Mondays.
its return journey, the train (02821) will leave Pune at 10.30am every Monday, beginning December 5. It will reach Tatanagar at 2.20pm the next day. And, it will arrive at Santragachi, the originating station, at 6.15pm the same day.
The special train with three AC-II and eight AC-III coaches, and two SLR (sitting-cum-luggage) rakes will stop at Kharagpur, Tatanagar, Chakradharpur, Rourkela, Jharsuguda, Bilsapur, Raipur, Durg, Nagpur, Bhusaval and Panvel stations.
Ticket booking for winter holidays has already gained momentum at Tatanagar.
Officials at the computerised reservation counters said the maximum rush was for trains bound for Mumbai, New Delhi and southern cities in the last week of December and first week of January.
The waiting lists for major trains like Tata-Alleppey Express, Mumbai Mail, Howrah-Mumbai Geetanjali and Tata-Yeshwantpur has crossed the 150 mark between December 24 and January 6. For other trains, the figures are hovering between 100 and 125, they said.
Worse is the situation for trains such as Puri-New Delhi Purushottam Superfast Express and Howrah-Ahmedabad Express. Even waiting list slots are not available on dates like December 24, 25, 27, 28, 29, 30 and the first three days of January, as the reservation quota has reached a "no-room" status.
Winter vacation in schools and colleges will commence in the third week of December. Keeping this in mind, passengers book their tickets in advance for different tourist destinations.
Chotanagpur Passengers' Association and Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) have demanded additional coaches in long-distance trains to clear the rush. "We will soon issue a formal request to the railways for additional coaches," said Suresh Sonthalia, president of SCCI.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
