The state cabinet on Thursday decided to rename the city airport and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) in order to add the honorific `Maharaj' to the name. So the new names will now be Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
A legislator who did not wish to be named said the renaming seemed to have been done to woo the Maratha community , particularly in view of Maratha morchas across the state to demand reservations.
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said the demand to add `Maharaj' to the
names was an old one. Vinayak Mete of the Shiv Sangram Party had first raised the issue last year. The state cabinet on Thursday renamed the city airport and CST in order to add `Maharaj' to the names.Vinayak Mehte, who supports the BJP-led state government, had raised the issue in the legislative council during last year's winter session of the state legislature in Nagpur. He had then said the names of the airport and CST referred to the great Maratha warrior in “singular terms“.
The proposal will now be sent to the Union government for its approval.
Girish Bapat, food and civil supplies minister, said the change had been made in honour of the Maratha hero who was a king.
Another legislator said the name change would cost the aviation industry and the railway authorities a lot as they would have to replace signboards, tickets and other stuff. He, however, said the state move was a good one.
An MLA said the government seemed to want to win over voters, particularly Marathas, ahead of elections to ten municipal corporations.“If the demand was an old one, the government should have taken the decision earlier. What was the urgency?“ the MLA asked.
The Mumbai, Solapur, Akola and Nagpur civic bodi es are among the ones that will go to polls early in 2017.
The Union government had renamed Victoria Terminus as CST in 1996, months after Bombay was renamed as Mumbai. Sahar airport was renamed in 1999.
An airport source, requesting anonymity , said, “It's not known how long it would take and how much it would cost to bring about the airport name change. To begin with, airlines will be informed to change the airport name on tickets. The airport website is, the domain name will need to be changed.“
Other than the obvious changes that need to be made on signages and boards, the airport operator will need to send a note to all the international agencies, companies and airlines it deals with informing them about the change. “It's not the first time the city airport's name has been changed. I don't think any other major international airport has had such name changes,“ an official said.
“Legal opinion will be sought and requisite action taken with regard to all agreements the airport has entered into with other parties under the current name,“ said another official. Among the other administrative changes would be those in the official letterhead, visiting cards, etc.
An aviation consultant, who requested anonymity , sa id, “Mumbai urgently needs a new airport. The country's domestic passenger traffic has been growing at an annual rate of 22%, but there is no sign of the Navi Mumbai airport. The current airport has no land for expansion. While these issues remain unaddressed, the airport name has been changed. If only they paid a fraction of the attention to the economic loss the city suffers because its only airport has infrastructure constraints.“
This is pure tokenism. A greater tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji would be to improve infrastructure and fight unemployment, poverty and other issues before the state and country. Frequent name change only creates hassles and forces needless administrative changes.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
