Railway minister Suresh Prabhu on Sunday said the BJP-led governments in the Centre and the state have planned a Rs40,000-crore infra boost to improve Mumbai’s lifeline
MUMBAI: Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections next year, Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu on Sunday had a lot to offer to commuters from the city.
Railway minister Suresh Prabhu, flanked by other ministers,
flags off a train from Bandra to Gorakhpur at Bandra on Sunday.
Here’s some of them: a new express train from Bandra Terminus to Gorakhpur, a new platform at Dadar station, escalators at Bhayander and Vasai railway stations and 15-car services on the Western Railway (WR).
Prabhu also inaugurated the expanded wireless Internet connectivity to eight more stations, including Andheri and Borivli, and a facility for 24-fast trains to halt at Diva railway station.
That’s not all. At the inauguration function, Prabhu said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will announce a series of mega infrastructure projects for the city’s lifeline during his visit on December 24.
Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis will also be present on the occasion, the railway minister said.
Modi is scheduled to visit Mumbai to conduct a bhoomipujan for the two new Metro railway lines, two elevated roads, the Sewri-Nhava Sheva Mumbai -Trans Harbour Link and the Chhatrapati Shivaji memorial.
Railway officials said the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for MUTP-3, pegged at Rs10,947 crore.
Prabhu said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government plans to implement infrastructure work worth Rs40,000 crore for Mumbai’s suburban railways.
“The projects that are planned and are being implemented only for Mumbai, are worth more than Rs40,000 crore. The planned ones will be implemented in coming years. This is the first time that the city’s lifeline is getting the attention it deserves, after being ignored for a number of years,” Prabhu said.
The railway minister, however, stopped short of giving out the details of the upgrades.
Railway sources said the projects will include the third phase of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP 3), the quadrupling of the Vasai-Diva-Panvel line, the Bandra-Virar elevated line and the CST-Panvel elevated corridor.
The railway projects have been under consideration for the past several years to ease the pressure on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, which ferries 75 lakh commuters daily, making it one of the world’s busiest railway networks.
Prabhu also announced that they were going to improve Thane station on the central railway as part of the Smart City project, besides developing a new terminus at Kalyan, one of the most crowded stations on the route.
“We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Union Ministry of Urban Development to include the improvement of Thane railway station in the Smart City mission,” he said.
WHAT IS PLANNED: It includes several capacity additions such as Virar-Dahanu quadrupling, a Kalva-Airoli elevated link, and doubling of the capacity between Panvel and Karjat, among others
WHAT THIS MEANS: The project is expected to increase connectivity beyond Mumbai to various centres in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region
Status: Project received a nod from the Union government
WHAT IS PLANNED: The corridor was originally proposed between Churchgate and Virar in 2008. The BJP-led government has now revived it and is planning to implement the 48-km long line on a public private partnership basis
WHAT THIS MEANS: To lessen commuter burden on existing lines
Status: The railway ministry showed its commitment to the project in the budget, when Prabhu made an announcement about issuing tenders for the corridor
WHAT IS PLANNED: The project was originally sanctioned in the 2012-13 railway budget. Former Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi announced a pre-feasibility study for the project through the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation
WHAT THIS MEANS: This corridor will give direct rail connectivity to the new PROJECT international airport COST proposed at Navi Mumbai
Status: The project is waiting for an approval from the Centre

What about other metros like Chennai where IR spent everything to build their suburban network or convert to BG?
It has nothing to do with local bodies or state govt. funding IR network. Why should they? Will they get any profit from IR from ticket sales. So the ever increasing fleet of BMTC which is a self sustaining entity and is the lifeline of the city. Also local bodies get hardly a few hundred crores or thousand crores as taxes and other revenue, to spend it for the IT crowd to travel
faster to E-City and WFD is sheer waste. Let them take bus like other commoners or give up their cars.

True. Zero development of Gadchiroli district. The people are totally cut off due to rivers. Many trying to cross in coracles across Godavari are swept away. Thank god the great man R. R. Patil got the bridge to connect the district to Kaleswaram in TS. Now all travel to HYD for hospital and to earn a livelihood.

All state RTCs have a pricing of factor 1. That is 1 rupee for a Km in express buses and a little less in village buses. BMTC though costly is self-sustaining. Efficient and clean. Not a burden on state exchequer.
TN is the only state which heavily subsidises bus fare. Welfare states look alluring but will collapse one day because of the sheer burden of subsidies.

A majority of taxes collected by the central govt by way of income tax, excise/ST etc are reverted back in thousands of crores to states by way of annual plan assistance and other funds by the Centre. These businesses, salaried persons who directly & indirectly contribute to the taxes/duties are facilitated by suburban travel, the subsidy of which is borne by IR, where as benefit is reaped by the state govt. Logically, a part of the revenue should be directly given by central govt to IR for the subsidy borne by IR, but unfortunately that did not happen. So IR ask directly to states to contribute/ participate & state govt readily agrees in many cases.
IR used to make up for
the losses by indisrciminately increasing freight fare and lost its market share to road/air mode. This way negligence of IR by center has made IR a financially sick organisation. RMs (mis)used scarce IR funds to buy votes rather than to improve the IR. The result is before us, a cash strapped IR taking hundreds of steps (often unethical) just to increase the revenue in order to meet the necessary expenses.

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
