ट्रेनों को समय से चलाने के लिए रेलवे बोर्ड नई योजना पर काम कर रहा है। इससे कोई ट्रेन किसी भी स्टेशन (बड़े-छोटे) पर पांच मिनट से अधिक समय तक नहीं रुकेगी। मेल, सुपर फास्ट एक्सप्रेस, पैसेंजर, मेमू व डेमू ट्रेनों के ठहराव की व्यवस्था एक तरह से होगी। रेलवे में इसी कारण 2017 में एक जुलाई के बदले 1 अक्तूबर से ट्रेनों की नई समय सारणी लागू होने की उम्मीद है। टाटानगर से गुजरने वाली राजधानी एवं दुरंतो समेत लंबी दूरी की लगभग ट्रेनों को नए शेड्यूल पर चलाया जाएगा। राजधानी एवं दुरंतो को अधिकतम तीन मिनट ठहराव देने की योजना है। इंजन बदलने के लिए 15 मिनट : इंजन बदलने या बोगी जोड़ने वाली ट्रेनों को स्टेशन पर रेलवे सिर्फ 15 मिनट का ठहराव देगा। ठहराव कम करने पर रेलवे को दक्षिण-पूर्व जोन की हर ट्रेनों के परिचालन समय में बदलाव भी करना होगा। पानी व पार्सल के समय...

में कटौती : रेलवे का मानना है कि ट्रेनों को पानी व पार्सल चढ़ाने और उतारने के चक्कर में ज्यादा समय रुकना पड़ता है। दोनों कार्यों के समय में अब कटौती होगी। टाटानगर में ट्रेनों में पानी देने और पार्सल का चक्कर है। रेलकर्मियों को मिलेगा प्रशिक्षण : ठहराव कम करने पर रेलवे इंजन बदलने, बोगी जोड़ने, ट्रेनों में पानी देने व पार्सल से जुड़े रेलकर्मियों को कम समय में काम करने का मंडल एवं ब्रांच स्तर पर प्रशिक्षण देगा, ताकि ट्रेन के आवागमन पर असर न पड़े। रेलवे की पहल बेहतर : जमशेदपुर से राष्ट्रीय रेलवे उपभोक्ता व सलाहकार समिति के सदस्य डॉ. अरुण तिवारी के अनुसार पहल बेहतर है। लेकिन, सिर्फ ठहराव कम करने से ट्रेनें समय पर नहीं चलेंगी। मालगाड़ी के लिए यात्री ट्रेनों (एक्सप्रेस-पैसेंजर) को आउटर पर रोकने की प्रवृति में भी बदलाव की जरूरत है।

* It is very pleasing experience to note that IR is trying to improve efficiency by eliminating unwanted stoppages, which are historically being given to many trains and at many stations.
* Some stations are given longer stoppage at many stations where the number of paxs is not very high, but before reducing the stoppage duration, coach watering system, parcel/meals loading/unloading, coach indication systems at platforms, duty changing protocols etc have to be ramped up along with the training of the concerned employees. Else there will in more instances of chain pulling and trains shall end up running late.

Many a times longer stoppages than required are given to stations of Rly HQs which can be conveniently shortened. Most of the train stop at Surat (BCT-NDLS) for 5 minutes and stop for longer duration at stations with much lesser traffic.
* Excessive stoppages are often given to trains for loco reversal. Trains from Delhi and bound to Chattisgarh had to do a loco reversal at NGP. Earlier 30-45 minute stoppage was given at Nagpur which has been brought down to about 20-25munutes. Further reduction is possible
* Stoppages of trains at NGP station with loco reversal.

Stoppage of 10/15 minutes is manageable for Raj, than there is no point in stopping trains for as long as 55 minutes! Appreciable reduction in stoppages is really possible possible
