BENGALURU: Platform 2 of Mantri Square Sampige Road Station in Malleswaram was abuzz with nervous electricity on Saturday evening. With minutes to go before the launch of the Green Line to Yelachenahalli in South Bengaluru, Metro officials, workers, security staff and media persons from across the country were anxiously eyeing the big screen installed at the platform, providing a live feed of the remote launch of the project by President Pranab Mukherjee. He was doing it from Vidhana Soudha, 5km away.
Gowda, who was responsible for flagging off the firstever train to leave Sampige Road Station to Yelachenahalli, had his eyes fixed on the screen, a walkie-talkie to his ear, confirming that the President was pressing the button. Along with train operator
Shantiraj who drove the first train bearing 20 BMRCL officials and Metro maintenance and operation workers, Gowda had an important job. At 6:20pm, he waved the green flag, allowing train number 7219 to leave the platform on its inaugural journey. A second train left five minutes later, with security officials, engineers and media persons.
Platforms bedecked with flowers and streamers, and green and purple balloons decorating the spotless interiors of the spanking new train, every station we passed had smiling staff and officials waving to us.
Speaking about his sevenyear journey with BMRCL, junior engineer R Kumar is happy to deliver this service to the people of the city.
"Our hard work has paid off. I myself use the Metro every day to go to work. Our Metro will be world class. Now that we have completed Phase 1, it will be easier for us to face the challenges of the next phases. We even went for Delhi for training to learn the best practices," he said.
During its 28-minute journey, the train stopped only at Majestic, National College and Rashtriya Vidyalaya Road stations, which are the interlocking stations for the remaining stations, as the signals are given from these stations.
Upon reaching Yelachenahalli, the passengers disembarked and crossed over to the opposite platform from where Divya, a diploma holder working as a train operator since 2015, drove us back to Mantri Square. With smiling faces, clapping citizens and workers keen to capture their journey on the train, the launch of the completed Phase 1 had the sweet smell of a successful start.
They also made it to the launch
SVS Rao, 77, watching the launch of Namma Metro's Green Line up to Yelachenahalli was something he was not prepared to miss. Aware that he would be denied permission being a civilian, he managed to get into Mantri Square Sampige Road Station ahead of the launch, along with some mediapersons, and was pleased as punch with his efforts. The resident of Malleswaram, who lives 2km from the station, had been watching work going on, and waiting for his turn to use the extended Metro network.
"I'm planning to use the Metro once a week to visit my daughter in Kengeri. I had to take a bus to Majestic in order to do that, but the journey will be smoother now. I had never thought such a thing was possible; it is like riding a pushpak vimana (roughly translates to flying chariot in Indian mythology)," he exclaimed excitedly.
Ditto with Jayanthi. The gram panchayat member from Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru South, was the proud holder of a VVIP pass that would have allowed entry into Vidhana Soudha for the inaugural ceremony . She, however, found it more interesting to watch and experience the new line. "It is a great move that will benefit many people and cut down heavily on traffic. Many people living in the South will benefit. We were excited to see the launch," said Jayanthi.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...
