WR gears up to start train service from September
Mumbai: The Western Railway (WR) authorities have almost finalised the timetable for the much-awaited air-conditioned suburban trains.
The train service will run between Churchgate and Virar, and the first train will leave from Borivali for Churchgate. It will run only on the fast corridors.
According to senior Western Railway officials, the timetable will be merged
with the regular schedule from September. “The first AC local will run from Borivali to Churcgate in the morning. Two services will run during the morning and evening rush hours each,” said one official.
The first train will depart from Borivali for Churchgate at 7.30 a.m. The first train from Churchgate will leave at 8.15 a.m. and reach Virar in 80 minutes. After a peak-hour turnaround time of three minutes, the train will depart from Virar to Churchgate around 9.30 a.m.
In the evening rush hours, the train will depart from Churchgate at 5.30 p.m. and reach Virar in 80 minutes. The train will leave for the return journey around 6.45 p.m. The last train will leave from Churchgate to Borivali around 8 p.m.
After the last trip, the rakes will got to Mumbai Central carshed, where they will regularly undergo maintenance work.
WR has planned a total 12 AC services throughout the day. According to one official, the timetable is being decided with corporate passengers in mind. “We have recorded an increase in first-class passengers beyond Kandivali. Hence, we have decided to run the AC local till Virar. We are trying to provide the service to passengers from every station,” the official said.
WR has also sent a proposal to allot reserved coaches for female passengers. “The proposal is pending with HQ,” said another official.
The fare for the AC service will be approximately 25% more than the current first-class fare. The tickets will be available as monthly and quarterly season passes too. Regular trials have been conducted at night, and preparations are on to start the AC service in September, as announced by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu.

Success of the ac suburban trains depend a lot on the frequency of the ac locals.
Success is guaranteed if one ac coach is provided in almost all the fast locals operating on the route instead of running a few fully ac local trains.

I think the morning timing is totally wrong for borivali as well as virar. 7 30 am from borivali is a bit early and 9 30 am from virar is too late for office going people.
IF WR wants it to be a success, they need at least 2 rakes to start with. These should depart virar and borivali simultaneously at around 8 15 am so that borivali people get a chance to board another local coming from virar at around 8 45 am if they miss the borivali starting local due to any reason. This would assure guaranteed success of AC locals. Also the season ticket rate should be same as being charged for normal first class since, the first class
people are paying upto 10 times extra for no extra services in existing locals.
