NEW DELHI: This October, when Delhi Metro throws open to the public its Magenta Line spanning Janakpuri West and Botanical Garden, expect to get a train — and a driverless one at that — every 100 seconds.
The 36.98km stretch, the first phase of which will be commissioned after three months, will run on Communication Based Train Control (CBCT), a state-of-the-art signaling technology, which will help the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) slash its existing peak-hour frequency of 135 seconds.
A DMRC spokesperson said this technology being installed in the Magenta and Pink

Lines (Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar to be operational from December) is an advanced version of the one used in the just-launched Kochi Metro and has higher levels of automation, allowing driverless train operations. DMRC is the implementing agency for Kochi Metro as well.
The CBCT technology to be used at the two Phase III corridors — are expected to become fully operational by March 2018 — allows trains to run on the same track with a reduced gap, which allows for the faster frequency. The CBCT technology will also allow driverless train operations on the two upcoming corridors.
"In our present corridors, the minimum distance kept between two trains varies from 50 metres to 90 metres, depending on the train type. However, in the Magenta and Pink Lines, this gap has been reduced to 30 metres, which allows better frequency of trains," a DMRC official said.
The official said that the system offers more precision and tracks sends the exact position of a train to the operations control centre as compared to the existing technology on other corridors. "During the actual train operations, the frequency between two trains would be kept at 100 seconds during peak hours," the official said.
Increased frequency, however, would also mean that the DMRC would need to deploy more trains on the corridors to meet the demand. The DMRC is at present in the process of procuring more trains for the upcoming Phase III corridors

* Congrats Delhi Metro-Magenta Line - A train every second should be the highest frequency on any single corridor in India!!! This single corridor is as good as two parallel corridors with spacing of a metro every 200 seconds or about 3 minute which is common in normal metro!
* Benefits of Automation and advanced signalling Signalling- It can double the capacity by close spacing between trains at small cost as compared to huge cost of constructing one more corridor with 3-4 minutes of spacing between trains.
* IR need to embark upon

large scale modernisation & automation throughout its network so that capacity augmentation can be done at much lesser cost & in much lesser time. But it will increase the importance of signalling dept at the cost of the powerful Engg deptt who may not like it.

To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...
