BHUBANESWAR: Residents of Mahipur in Nayagarh district have a reason to cheer because the Railways has decided to construct a new station between Nayagarh Town and Nuagaon station on the 289-km long Khurda-Bolangir new line.
There was no station planned on the 25.07 km stretch between Nayagarh Town station and Nuagaon station during survey for the old project sanctioned in 1996-97. Keeping the public demand and operational feasibility in mind, the Railways took this decision recently.

give green signal to the second one. It will delay the train operations in the line. So it was felt necessary to have a new station with proper station building at a midpoint between the two long-distanced stations,” said a senior railway officer.
Mahipur, a highly populated and a major local market, will suitably bifurcate the long section between Nayagarh Town and Nuagaon. After public demand, the state government had also requested and forwarded their demand to the Railways for a station at Mahipur.
ECoR general manager Umesh Singh has already approved the proposal in view of above reasons.
“In a single line section like Khurda Road- Bolangir, stations within 12 km to 14 km are of great advantage. In this case, it will not only operationally help us but also benefit a large section of population. Earlier, we were thinking of having a passenger halt at Mahipur. But in the larger interest of the system, we will have a full-fledged station with building and platforms,” said East Coast Railway (ECoR) chief public relations officer JP Mishra.
The initial survey was done by RITES, a public limited company under the aegis of the Railways. That was many years ago. Operational, commercial, social as well as situational circumstances have changed in the meanwhile. So the positive changes were made in this survey, official sources said.
Around 70km of the 289-km long Khurda Road-Bolangir railway line has been commissioned till date. Khurda Road-Bolagarh Road passenger trains were extended to Nayagarh town on June 19.
The Railways has set a target to complete the Rs.3,005 crore Khurda Road-Bolangir project by June 2021. The Centre has allocated Rs 700 crore in the Union Budget this year for the project which will connect western part of the state to coastal Odisha. The districts like Boudh and Subarnapur, which have no railway network, will get railway communication through this new rail line.

Very good move by ECoR/IR
25.07km distance between 2 consecutive station on a single line is too long a distance. Sectional capacity of whole 289 km long route shall be badly hit due to a single 25kmlong inter-station spacing. In single line the interstation spacing should be below 10km so that the trains don't have to wait for long for crossing.
