BHUBANESWAR: "I was about to enter into the bridge. I saw two pillars of the railway bridge over Nagabali river between Therubali and Singapur Road stations collapsed in front of me. I immediately informed station master about the incident," said Hari Himirika, 35, a licensed porter of Theruvali station.
The porter's phone call to the station master on Sunday saved a goods train which was supposed to cross the bridge that collapsed due to heavy flow of flood water in river Nagabali. After this call, the station master immediately stopped the train which was given track signal at Singapur Road to reach Theruvali after crossing the bridge.

father of three kids, said Theruvali station master P S Chari requested him to visit Patraput, which is situated on the other side of the bridge, to call station sweeper. "I got scared of the heavy flow of water in the river, so I changed my mind to cross the river through old bridge. When I was entering into the new bridge, I found the pillars of the old bridge collapsing. I immediately telephoned to station master and told him about the incident," he added.
Station master Chari got the information at around 11 am. A goods train had already left Singapur Road. It was on the way to cross the old bridge, but it was controlled at B Cabin before the bridge's location. "When I knew that the bridge is collapsed, my heartbeat went up. I immediately informed the Singapur Road station officials to stop the train anyhow. Thank god they controlled it at B Cabin before the river bridge," he added.
Chari thanked the porter for supplying instant information. "Because of the phone call, we managed to avoid a possible accident. We appreciate the help of the porter," he added.

* We have seen porters lifting luggage of 20-50 kgs and take a few paxs to station entry with safety.
* But this smart and alert porter has ensured safety of 4000-5000 T load (freight train), and ensure safety of rest of the bridge, as the whole bridge would have been destroyed had Hari Hamirika not intervened and freight train derailed on the collapsed two pillars.
* Hats off to the great porter and may God bless him. He have definitely averted an imminent major disruption in Rly services on the route.

Porter could have been rewarded immediately by SM as he can spend some amount under his power.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...
