AURANGABAD: The South Central Railway (SCR) plans to set up special sheds that can maintain both diesel as well as electrical locomotives of trains under one roof.
SCR general manager Vinod Kumar Yadav announced the novel measure at the 38th meeting of the electric-loco maintenance study group held recently. The measure is expected to reduce maintenance time and other related costs as well as facilitate seamless running of trains.
While elaborating on Yadav's plans, an SCR official said that the SCR is working on the idea to develop loco sheds that can maintain
both diesel and electrical locomotives under one roof. "It will offer multiple benefits, including achieving the status of zero locomotive failure during the running of trains," the official said.
The SCR currently has nearly 3,000 km of tracks where the electrification work is complete and 600 electric locomotives for different parts of the zone
Railway activists have welcomed the proposed move. Omprakash Varma of the advocacy group Marathwada Railway Vikas Samiti, said Purna junction in Marathwada could serve as an ideal place to set up one such loco shed.
"Purna earlier had one loco shed but this was moved to a city in south India over seven years ago. It is a good move to set up a loco shed that can cater to both diesel and electrical locomotives," he said.
Another railway activist Rajkumar Somani said the SCR's Nanded division could benefit from the SCR plans in the future. "We still do not have electrification on a major chunk of railway routes. But given the work is in progress, the proposed sheds can be of benefit to the region also," he said.
As announced earlier the SCR plans electrification for another 700-km route by the end of current financial year that includes some work in Nanded division. Addressing the meeting, member (traction) of the railway board Ghanshyam Singh stressed that revolutionary changes can be brought in locomotive power by leveraging technological advancements.
He also advised the railway officials to focus on adopting good management techniques to achieve reliability and safety of locomotives for hassle-free train operations.
"The staff engaged in maintenance work of the locomotives should be properly trained and updated about new technologies that will be introduced. The Indian Railways has embarked upon a huge project for electrification of tracks to improve speed and haulage capacity," Singh said, stressing on the need for better management of maintenance facilities, spare parts and technological systems.

To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...
