Nagpur: The Railway Board's Passenger Amenities Committee (PAC) on Wednesday found five grey areas on the amenities front at the Nagpur railway station during inspection.
The three-member PAC consisting of Ramanand Tripathi, Manisha Chatterjee and Prabhunath Chauhan, during their two-hour inspection of the station from platform number 1 to 8, found that amenities did not match as compared to revenue earned by the station.
Nagpur railway station alone earns Rs1 crore per day from all sources.
grey areas which need to be given thrust include improving parking, restarting battery operated cars (BOCs), launch of cabs, trolleys and escalators on every platform.
Tripathi told TOI that the situation was not so bad at the station. "I suggested to install escalators on each platform, though there is a proposal for four," he added.
"On two platforms, I found damaged flooring. Besides, tiles in toilets in waiting hall were also broken. I asked to replace mica of some furniture in waiting halls," he said.
The PAC members also suggested to increase the number of cheap water vending machines installed by IRCTC. Another issue was about exploitation of labour by the safari contractors. "We came to know that the cleanliness contractor pays Rs6,000 per month per staffer. This should be actually Rs13,000. Similar was the plight of workers at water vending machines," said Tripathi.
"If the safari workers are not paid even minimum wages, how can you expect cleanliness?" he added. Interestingly, Nagpur station has been ranked 237th among A1 category clean stations across the country.
The PAC members also visited the Food Plaza on platform number 1 where a section of passengers, who opted for Rs207 thali, told them that they were satisfied with the quality of food.
The members also talked to Government Railway Police (GRP) to inquire about the number of run over cases. "We were told that a proposal to hike grants to dispose of unclaimed bodies at the stations from Rs1,000 to Rs5,000 has been forwarded to the Railway Board," said Tripathi.
The members also talked to divisional railway manager (DRM) Brijesh Kumar Gupta and senior officials about various issues. The PAC members will do inspection of Gondia and Tumsar stations under SECR on Thursday. On Friday, they will inspect Bhandara station and meet SECR DRM A K Agarwal.

To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...
