Travelling by train from Chennai to Madurai is set to become shorter by at least 90 minutes. From December, Southern Railway will be able to speed up existing trains and run more services on the section as doubling on the 497-km stretch would be completed, general manager Vashishta Johri declared on Tuesday , in his Independence Day speech.
As part of the project being handled by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd, the national transporter's engineering arm, the Chennai-Trichy stretch had been doubled and electrified by May . About 20km of doubling and some patchwork remained on the Trichy-Dindigul section and could be completed before December, sources said.

Dindigul-Madurai line is already doubled and the Union cabinet recently cleared the proposal to double the Madurai-Kanyakumari stretch.
The new lines to Madurai will be able to take train speeds up to 100kmph a month after commissioning and can help shorten running time by as much as 20%, sources in the department said. The travel time of Pandian Express, which now takes around 9 hours to cover the distance between the two cities, could come down by at least an hour and a half.
The section, known as South BG chord line, is saturated due to the huge demand for trains. Regular trains are always full and those unable to get tickets are at the mercy of fleecing private buses to travel to places like Madurai, Trichy and Kanyakumari. There are just 11-14 trains, including specials and weekly services, between Chennai and Madurai daily .
While a decision on spee ding up trains could be delayed, running more trains could be easily implemented.“Air-conditioned superfast specials can be run to regain passengers lost to the road sector,“ a senior operations department official said.
Johri also said doubling of the 47-km PonmalaiThanjavur stretch was set for completion this year.“Work is also on at good pace on Karaikkudi-Pattukkottai (73km) stretch, Chennai Beach-Korukkupet 3 and 4 lines (8km) and Korukkupet-Thi ruvottiyur fourth line (5km),“ he said.
About `34.25 crore of the `74 crore allocated for passenger amenities was spent, Johri said. Twenty-five Unmanned Level Crossings were eliminated and 33 Limited Height subways and 7 ROBs RUBs commissioned till July. About 25 Level Crossing Gates were interlocked. On Board Housekeeping Services (OBHS) were introduced in 74 of the targeted 110 trains and 40% of coaches fitted with bio-toilets, Johri said.
Southern Railway's financial and operational performance dips
Chennai: Southern Railway's financial and operational performance has continued to dip. From an operating ratio of 146.9 in April, it has gone up to 165.8 up till July, Southern Railway General Manager Vashishta Johri said on Tuesday.Operating ratio is the amount spent to earn `100; lower the ratio, better is the performance of the zone.
This is despite a 1.9 percent increase in the number of passengers carried in the April-July period, as compared to last year. Passenger earnings too increased by 5%. However, freight earnings have not improved, with loading going down by 2.5 million tonnes, Johri said.
On the operation side, the punctuality of the zone has dropped from 87% in 2016-17 to 85.5% in the April-July period this year; statistics reeled out by Johri showed. This is even as Chennai division's punctuality, especially in the suburban trains sector, has increased by at least 10 points. “We are working to improve it further,“ Johri said.
On the passenger front, while the zone ran 947 special trains, an increase of 117% compared to last year, there has been a decrease in the permanent and temporary augmentation of coaches to trains. Because of this, the number of additional berths created has come down from 1.11 lakh in the April-July period last year to 71,208 in same period this year, statistics show. TNN

To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...
