CHENNAI: Travelling by train from Chennai to Madurai is set to become shorter by at least 90 minutes. From December, Southern Railway will be able to speed up existing trains and run more services on the section as doubling on the 497-km stretch would be completed, general manager Vashishta Johri announced on Tuesday, in his Independence Day speech.
As part of the project being handled by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), the national transporter's engineering arm, the Chennai-Trichy stretch had been doubled and electrified by May. About 20km of doubling and some patchwork remained on the Trichy-Dindigul section and could be completed before December, sources said.
Dindigul-Madurai line is already doubled and the Union cabinet recently cleared the proposal to double the Madurai-Kanyakumari stretch.
The new lines to Madurai will be able to take train speeds up to 100kmph a month after commissioning and can help shorten running time by as much as 20%, sources in the department said. The travel time of Pandian Express, which now takes around 9 hours to cover the distance between the two cities, could come down by at least an hour and a half.
The section, known as South BG chord line, is heavily saturated due to the huge demand for trains. Regular trains are always full and those unable to get tickets are left at the mercy of fleecing private buses to travel to places like Madurai, Trichy and Kanyakumari. There are only 11-14 trains, including specials and weekly services, between Chennai and Madurai daily.
While a decision on speeding up trains could be delayed, running more trains could be easily implemented. "Air-conditioned superfast specials can be run to regain passengers we have lost to the road sector," a senior operations department official said.
Johri also said doubling of the 47-km Ponmalai-Thanjavur stretch is set for completion this year. "Work is also on at good pace on Karaikkudi-Pattukkottai (73km) stretch, Chennai Beach-Korukkupet 3 and 4 lines (8km) and Korukkupet-Thiruvottiyur fourth line (5km)," he said.
About Rs 34.25 crore of the Rs 74 crore allocated for passenger amenities has already been spent, Johri said. 25 Unmanned Level Crossings were eliminated and 33 Limited Height subways and 7 ROBs/RUBs commissioned till July. About 25 Level Crossing Gates have been interlocked, he added.
On Board Housekeeping Services (OBHS) were introduced in 74 of the targeted 110 trains and 40% of coaches fitted with bio-toilets, Johri said.

Efforts of RM have started yielding fruits, more and faster trains shall come as a boon to people.
1.5 hrs reduction between MS-MDU shall be awesome, as all the express trns on the route are likely to become SFs.
MAS-MDU duronto should now be be routed via the chord line to save a couple of hrs.

To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...
