Mumbai: The Government Railway Police (GRP) has nabbed a woman at Ram Mandir station, who scared commuters with a monkey and extracted money from them. The woman and the animal were handed over to forest officials at Sanjay Gandhi National Park on Monday.
According to the GRP, the woman identified as Renu Jadhav is a resident of Palghar, who begs for a living. She would unleash her monkey on commuters at stations between Palghar and Bandra. She would then demand money for taking the animal back.
Santosh Kank, a forest official, said they
had received complaints from an NGO, who had warned the woman against the practice. “The monkey was taken from the forest of Nanded and trained by the woman to harass commuters.”
The woman was arrested after a few commuters at Ram Mandir station complained of harassment. She was presented before court on Monday, which remanded the woman and the monkey in the forest department’s custody for two days. The court then ordered the forest department to release the monkey in the forest on Tuesday evening.
“We have arrested the woman and will release the monkey after a check-up,” said Mr. Kank.
