KOLKATA: Consider the possibility of the Rajdhani Expresses from Howrah and Sealdah departing around 6 pm instead of 4.55pm and 4.50pm but reaching New Delhi at 10am as they do now. This would allow many passengers to attend office before boarding the trains.Similarly , the Howrah-New Jalpaiguri Shatabdi Express may turn more popular if it could reach its destination by 9.30pm instead of 10.25pm as it does now.
Indian Railways is now considering the possibility of introducing a zero-based timetable, which will bring down running time of most mailexpress trains. The process is likely to start six months later.

down the running time of trains under Indian Railways doesn't require too many changes in infrastructure. Unknown to most, passengers are forced to spend more hours in trains as the railways do not wish to spoil its punctuality figures and officials are afraid of being made more accountable towards proper maintenance and monitoring. "All trains have a normal lag of 15-20 minutes to account for delays. Apart from this, a few hours of lag are incorporated for possible problems along the way . For a certain train, the engineering department may want a lag of an hour and the signals and telecommunications department of 30 minutes. The electrical department may also want a lag of 30 minutes. This is done to account for delays along the way that would result in punctuality loss. A zero-based timetable will not allow any lag and any delay will be treated as loss of punctuality ," an official in the Railway Board said. Zonal railways are keen to announce punctuality figures of 95% or more. Some officials argue that if a zero-based timetable is actually introduced, more trains will get delayed and punctuality figures would come down to around 70% or even less. "Trains do reach stations ahead of schedule. This is because of the lag provided. If no lag is provided, more trains would get delayed and passengers would be inconvenienced as they won't be able to keep appointments or plan in advance. Such plans are being made by the Board to create space for more trains," another official said.
