BHATINDA: The Punjab government has finally notified the name of the railway station in Sunam town, Sangrur district, as Sunam Udham Singh Wala, just a couple of months ahead of the assembly elections. The gazette notification for the name change was issued by the state department of revenue and rehabilitation on December 16, after the Union home ministry had given a go-ahead to the move on December 8. The town was changed from just Sunam to Sunam Udham Singh Wala in January 2006, but the state government had not taken up the matter of changing the railway station's name since then with the Centre. Following a public interest litigation filed by Chandigarh-based advocate H C Arora in the Punjab and Haryana high court, the state government had submitted a proposal to the Union home ministry on June 24 to allow it to change the railway station's name.
A railways official said the railway station display board with a new name would be installed in a few days. Arora said, "The Union government had approved the name of Sunam to Sunam Udham Singh Wala on April 7, 2005, and the Punjab government had notified it on January 25, 2006. However, the name of the railway station was not changed. Now that the Union home ministry has approved it, the state government has issued a notification. It is a befitting tribute to the martyr, though belated." Ambala divisional railway manager (DRM) Dinesh Kumar told TOI that the though Punjab government had issued a notification about changing name after getting approval from the Union home ministry, they were waiting for directions from the railways ministry to change the display boards with new names and hoped it would be done in few days. Udham Singh's birth anniv next week The name of the railway station in Sangrur district's Sunam town has been changed to Sunam Udham Singh Wala just a few days before the 117th birth anniversary of the revolutionary. Udham Singh was born in Sunam on December 26, 1899. He was hanged on July 31, 1940, for killing former governor of British Punjab Michael O'Dwyer. His martyrdom day is observed every year on July 31.
