NAGPUR: On Thursday, the Nagpur railway station is set to achieve a milestone in passenger and freight train operations with the commissioning of long-stalled doubling of Kalamna-Nagpur railway line.
The Rs 21-crore doubling project was announced in the 2007-08 Railway Budget to ease congestion on Howrah-Mumbai route. In nine years, the project cost escalated to Rs 37 crore as encroachments in between delayed the project.
Railway officials termed doubling as the biggest project to streamline train operations. They said if at all a major development in operations would come in future, it would

be the third line between Nagpur and Wardha.
They said daily 85-90 passenger and freight trains ply between Nagpur and Kalamna over two available single lines — one connecting Kalamna and Nagpur and another Itwari. The new line will augment section capacity by about 30%, thereby easing congestion, especially in Kalamna and Nagpur sections.
"Operating so many trains on a single twin line was a Herculean task. Now, congestion will be eased by over 50% and trains' handling capacity will go up by one-third," officials told TOI.
The South East Central Railway (SECR), Nagpur, has completed non-interlocking (NI) work last month and is awaiting clearance from commissioner railway safety (CRS). The crucial Rs 37-crore project will be inspected by CRS (Eastern Circle) PK Acharya on November 17 morning, with a speed trial at 110 kmph. He will also do trolley inspection of the new track.
The double line gives edge to both Central Railway and SECR. Earlier, being a single line section, only one train could be permitted between Kalamna and Nagpur. Now, two trains could be permitted.
"Passengers will not have to wait at the outer for long for want of path and vacant platform at Nagpur station. The doubling will not only ease congestion but curb detention of trains," said Central Railway divisional railway manager (DRM) Brijesh Kumar Gupta.
Gupta said doubling has paved way for utilizing platform number 8 (home platform) fully by admitting trains on the east side. This will also create space for other trains at platform numbers 3, 4, 5 & 6. Currently, home platform is used by Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto only.
Even SECR DRM Amit Kumar Agarwal said that owing to less rains, hydropower generation is down and there has been 20% rise in coal transportation on SECR routes.
"With doubling, we stand to gain as there will be a dedicated line for freight train movement. It will also improve train punctuality on east-west route. In future, Nagpur can get more trains," Agarwal said.
"At Itwari station, we are constructing two pit lines where trains can be maintained. Hence, doubling is a win-win situation," the DRM said.
Agarwal said it was an arduous task taking blocks and completing OHE, signalling, yard remodelling at Kalamna, and laying of tracks in record time
