BENGALURU: The green potential of Namma Metro seems to be benefiting the city, after all. A recent analysis of air quality by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has revealed a dip in pollutant levels along the two Metro corridors since the entire Phase 1 of the mass transit system became operational in June. The study looked into the impact of the Metro routes — the 18-km East-West corridor (Byappanahalli to Mysuru Road) and 24-km North-South corridor (Nagasandra to Yelachenahalli) — on air quality. KSPCB's analysis of the ambient air quality showed that along the North-South corridor, values of the measured air pollutants decreased by an average of 8.9 %. Along the East-West corridor, the pollutants have reduced by an average of 13.3%.KSPCB chairman Lakshman said the analysis proves that a well-equipped mass transport reduces dependence on private vehicles, which, in turn, brings down vehicular emissions. network to other parts of the city," he added.A senior Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation official said, "Metro trains ferry about 3.6 lakh passengers daily. The trains are crowded during peak hours and there is a need to add more coaches. Tenders have been floated, and we hope to run six-coach trains by December or January," he added.
Sandesh PN, a programme developer and Metro commuter, said, "Travelling by Metro has improved my health. When I used to ride to work, I often developed respiratory infections, throat problems or body pain. Now, I travel from Mysuru Road to Byappanahalli in half an hour. I take a nap, read a book or listen to music during the commute."Sandesh PN, a programme developer and Metro commuter, said, "Travelling by Metro has improved my health. Quicker, greener and cheaper — Namma Metro is undoubtedly one of the most efficient and preferred modes of transport in Startup City. Apart from being a lifeline for lakhs of citizens, it's a suitable alternative to fleecing autorickshaws, fuel-guzzling vehicles, crowded buses and expensive cab rides. That it has helped reduce pollution levels in a metropolis gasping for breath comes as a whiff of fresh air. Apart from ensuring swift expansion of the network across the city, the authorities must procure additional coaches for trains at the earliest so that more commuters can ditch private vehicles and contribute to a greener Bengaluru.

Good to note that, at least in Metro cities, air quality is regularly monitored.
