Ministry of Tourism has approved funds for the project
Stating that a blueprint had been prepared for revamp of the eastern and western entries of Madurai junction, Neenu Ittyerah, Divisional Railway Manager (Madurai), said both the entrances would sport a new look once the project was implemented.
Speaking at the executive committee meeting of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Monday, she said the eastern entry had a lot of space, which would be put to good use. The project would involve sparing more space for premium parking and shifting
taxi service lot further away to reduce congestion near the entrance to the platforms, apart from a number of other works.
According to Ms. Ittyerah, the Ministry of Tourism has approved some funds for the project and an equal contribution will be made by the Southern Railway.
On the demand to develop the western entry, which remained considerably underutilised compared to the eastern entry, she said the key problem was the length of the platform closest to the western entry as it could not accommodate a 24-bogey train. However, she said plans were in progress to extend the length of the platform.
Regarding the delay experienced in completion of Madurai-Chennai track doubling project, She expressed hope that the project would be completed in the present financial year.
Similarly, the DRM said, the multi-functional complex at Madurai junction, which had remained closed for long despite completion of its construction, would be opened soon.
In response to the requests made by the Chamber for extending a number of north India-bound trains to Madurai, which presently terminate at Tiruchi, Coimbatore or Chennai, she explained the complexities involved in extending the trains since the maintenance of these trains would then have to be shifted to Madurai. She, however, assured the Chamber members that she would look into the possibilities of extending the trains to Madurai.
Madurai Division proposed to exhibit paintings, sculptures and other artworks of local artists at railway stations, she said and sought support from the Chamber and the business community in Madurai in this regard. She also sought its support in increasing the freight traffic handled here.
Stressing that safety had become the key focus of railways, she said high priority was being given to maintaining tracks and completely eliminating unmanned railway crossings.
