Southern Railway might give passengers on the Chennai-Bengaluru-Mysore Shatabdi a Pongal gift.
The zone has planned to incorporate two fresh hi-tech coaches with LCD screens, automatic sliding doors, reading lights, seats with footrest and attendant call facility on the train. The coaches, known as Anubhuti, and manufactured by the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory, have been delivered at Chennai Central station.
The coaches were inspected by general manager RK Kulshreshtha on Monday with officials trying their best to attach the coaches to the Shatabdi rake within two days for the Pongal rush.
coaches have an LCD screen at the back of each seat which will have pre-loaded movies, music, government programmes like Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Mann ki Baat' and other videos regarding the government. For the middle-facing seats, the LCD screens will be at the centre table, which will pop-up by a push button.
There will also be a GPS-based passenger information system. A pair of headphones will be provided for each screen. There will be a USB mobile charging point for each passenger between two adjoining seats. The toilets would be touch-free modular ones and also have a hand-drier facility, a top official said. Each coach cost Rs 3 crore, the official said.
The coach will be operated as an executive class coach. Currently, the Chennai-Bengaluru-Mysuru Shatabdi has only one executive class coach.
However, sources say the pricing will be a bit higher (1.1-1.2 times) than the executive class.
Currently, fares for executive class coach on the train from Chennai to Mysuru is Rs 1,835 and to Bengaluru Rs 1,445. The fare on Anubhuti coach will be around Rs 2,200 and Rs 1,735 after the increase.
Anubhuti coaches will also be introduced on the Chennai-Coimbatore Shatabdi, officials said.

To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...
